Open DNS

I am thinking of using OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com) instead of my ISP’s DNS. Is there any advantage in using OpenDNS? What has been members experience with Open DNS? Is it safe? If you have any experience, please share.

First you can search the board for openDNS and you’ll find more info.
There are some avast users that already tested it.

I have been using it for some time with no problem, the web site gives a number of advantages, anti-phishing being one.

We block phishing sites and give you the power to block adult sites, proxies and individual domains.

But there is much more on the site itself, http://www.opendns.com/features/overview/.

This should help:

I like it for the ability to block sites from my curious kids’ access.

It’s fast, reliable, auto fixes typos and protects from phising. Great service overall.

It will be better a software like K9 (www.k9webprotection.com) or Naomi (www.radiance.m6.net). For protection, IESpyAd, Spybot, SpywareBlaster or AdvancedWindowsCare have good immunization features.

With OpenDNS, there is nothing to install. If you have a router you only need change the DNS address of your WAN settings. Or in Windows, change the addy thru Network and Internet Connections in Control Panel. That and a sign-up at their website and Bob’s your uncle!

Bob's your uncle!
Just what I need, some more Nephews and Nieces..... ;D :) ;D

Here’s some more information on OpenDNS:

Great for Linux users, where the other two services aren’t available.
Oops… not available for dynamic IP addresses and Linux :-\
Edited: seems to require more work but seems possible using INADYN source code.

I dual boot XP and Linux (and dynamic-addy) with no OpenDNS-issues???

I guess OpenDNS supports dynamic IP as well.

Sorry uncle Bob, I didn’t catch the connection at first lol you must get a lot of that lol

Just ask my “nephew” Sasha…

A dynamic IP should make no difference as it is you that has the dynamic IP (I have dial-up so dynamically assigned IP address), the IP of the domain you are trying to reach isn’t a dynamic IP.

DynDNS or No-IP service can solve problems with dynamic IP’s as it’ll track your IP and report you back a static adress chosen by you.
It’s a quiet nice feature if you want to run FTP or HTTP server (or anything else which requires static address) on dynamic ISP service.

MySharedFiles is a great example

I’ve been using their service for a few years.
