Open executables very slow since 17.1.2286 / Win10

…since I updated to 17.1.2286 it takes much too long to open programs!

It’s about the setting “check programs during start” (don’t know the exact english wording, I’m using german language)
When I disabale this setting, it’s ok!

Avast 17.1.2286
Windows 10

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Avast 17.1.2286
Win 10 64bit / version 1607
installed Avast version before: 16.x

When I open libre office it takes over 5 seconds until the libre office splash screen
When I open a pic it takes over 5 seconds to see the pic - because the pic viewer is loaded too slow
On a SSD!

Disable Avast exe scan: no delay!

This issue occurs after the update to 17.x

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)

Avast Free

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Don’t forget that avast has introduced new scanning/detection technologies.
The more checks (more thorough detection methods), the slower things will become.

@Asyn: did that - no change!

@Eddy: yes, but no: to open a simple pic / pic viewer exe must not last over 5 seconds! Regardless what it scans!

But the questions is: Am I the only one??? Even you Avast guys wouldn’t accept this! So it might be an general issue, or related to my system?!

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15

I replied that I also experienced this problem and linked to my topic in case any dev was interested in reproduction.
It is sad to see my comment was deleted.

See Reply #8.

I installed the 2288 beta: it’s much worse now!
Open libre calc (10 times): 15 seconds (before 6 seconds)
Open a small pic: 8 seconds (before 5 seconds)

Without exe scan:
libre calc: 1,5 seconds
pic viewer: 1 second

CPU load is around 3% (with or without exe scan)

Again: does it happen only on my system? Can you guys confirm, that it does NOT happen with your Win10 64bit system?

Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB33#artTitle

did that: Ticket ID: [#731464]
But I was told that I don’t have a license?
I also uploaded the suport file.

I’m having this exact issue as well.

Win10 x64 1607 with the latest Avast Internet Security, updated via the ui for the last several versions with no other security software on the machine now or ever.

All exe files open extremely slow. The issue is resolved when file system shield or scan on execution/opening is disabled. Is there something wrong with the persistent/transient caching?

I am also having this problem. Running “repair” helped with SOME programs. Is that strange or what?

I have noticed that if I disconnect from net access this problem goes away completely. As it also does if I turn off avast, of course.

Waiting 7 seconds for a program to open is highly annoying when it is usually instantaneous.

Reinstalling did not help. In fact the programs that were helped by the “repair” are slow again.

Might be a bug, wait for one of the devs and/or submit a ticket: https://support.avast.com/support/tickets/new

It might be a bug? How many people have reported this now? This is a major problem and it’s been present in the last two versions of the software.

It’s ridiculous that something this big, an issue that affects nearly every aspect of the PC to such a large degree is present at all in paid software.

let’s wait for the next beta…
Then we can check again! :o
