I’ve been using Norton’s DNS service but was wondering if OpenDNS would be better and why? Possible there’s some differences I’m not aware of. From reading about thread here in some ways it seems ClearCLoud would be even better (not concerned about filtering), but apparently I’m still missing the differences.
norton dns, clearcloud, etc offer dns-level malware blocking as a primary feature.
opendns’ features are speed, robust content filtering (and parental controls) and dns metrics (data about queries, queries per hour, etc) to their users. they also block widespread malware c&c servers (conficker being a good example)
one note about clearcloud - you might notice a degradation in performance w/clearcloud vs norton dns or other providers - comcast’s peering w/GFI’s servers sucks, and you’ll often end up on an overseas DNS cluster instead of one stateside.
guessing that this topic should probably be in general topics though
Thanks for the details won what they do. I installed ClearCloud for a few hours and Rolledback by system because my internet seemed to slow down a bit.
Norton does not block/monitor “Proxy/anonymizer blocking” (which OpenDNS does), but OpenDns does not have “Malware site protection” which Norton does have.
I’m not sure “Proxy/anonymizer blocking” is or if it’s more important than the malware site protection.
(And yes this is in the wrong forum, but I don’t know how to move it.)
norton, dyndns internet guide, opendns and clearcloud all utilize anycast for recursive dns services.
@dagrev, if you haven’t yet, you could also try the dyn internet guide - http://www.dyndns.com/services/dynguide/ - has malware blocking capabilities, as well as content filtering if you ever want or need to leverage it.
I wouldn’t use Norton DNS because of issues with Ask.com. If you want speed, use Google DNS. I use ClearCloud DNS for blocking purposes as I find it nice to have an additional layer of protection. I( didn’t notice any slow down in speed.
Re: ClearCloud DNS Effective September 1, 2011, GFI’s ClearCloud DNS service will be discontinued and no longer available for consumer use…
you will need to reconfigure your network connection [removing ClearCloud]. If this is not done prior to September 1, 2011, your Internet connectivity will be interrupted.
