Opera 10.10 (with Unite) final is out

Can`t wait to get home and download/update it. Looks nice.

yeah it’s a really cool piece of software  … and you can run it, including all Unite services, on Linux too !

I’m trying out Unite right now but I`m curious about the security issues. A quick google search reveals some complaints in this department but these are made based on the alpha release not the final product. Any hints on this?

no, never heard about any security issue so far, but I don’t browse Opera forums regularly so I might have missed something. Anyway my only concern with Unite is that it’s not ssl encrypted… other than this it all goes through an Opera proxy which protects your IP, but also provides a mean to control transferred data content if they want to… yeah, it’s not encrypted.

adding: Unite works on LAN too btw, although Windows has enough native tools that I can find no reason to use Unite on a local network.

I understand the LAN issue. I have connected two Vista machines over LAN to transfer files and I’m quite pleased with how easy and fast the connection can be made and files transfers (average speed of 10MB/s with a cross patch cable … not a lan connection really but a similar process).

The reason I want to use unite is to be able to access home files from other locations via internet. I also wanted to have a way to keep an eye on what’s going home with the web cam but that seems to be cumbersome (I have no clue how to do it)

What do you mean by SSL encrypted?

PS
I am a truly confused computer user ;D

ssl is the most commonly OpenSource (as opposed to proprietary software) software used to encrypt communications. This avoids eavesdropping ( = third party that would intercept your data wouldn’t be able to read it). You use ssl for instance between a Gmail account in an Email client and a Gmail server… all https links (as opposed to http) are encrypted using ssl.

Thanks, that puts the webcam idea out of the question.

Opera 10.10 build with Unite functionality violates security policy on work network:

Don't enable Unite then, surely that should be the same? If you don't use the functionality, it shouldn't violate anything?

Thanks YoKenny for the link.

I did this for my notebook. I will do it for my Desktop as well.

I am using Opera 10.10 now without any problems. It seems to work better than the previous version.

Installed it. works better and faster than any other. but will have to come back to ff so that I can use my customizations that is addons.

thanks
