Opera & Avast mail scanning

After a month of testing, I can confirm that there is a problem between Avast and Opera mail/browser.
When Opera checks for new mail and at the same time is opening a new webpage, avast often will cause a error in Opera and make it shutdown.
Disabling mail scanner or disabling avast from scanning the Opera cache files prevents the error.

What version of Opera did you test? Granted, I only used Avast for one day (due to some other problems that may have been caused by an old Norton installation), but I had no problems with the Avast email scanner working in Opera 8.50, even with heavy surfing.

Opera 8.51 build 7712

Same version of Opera here on Win2K SP4, Avast never gives me error checking three of my accounts simultaneously, Gmail included.

That’s odd Eddy. I’ve been using avast! and Opera thru’ several Opera versions and have had no problems at all. Opera has never crashed for me on XP Home. I find it really stable (and I work it too hard really). Hope you sort it out.
Happy Days

I’ve had this problem with a earlier version of avast also.
A new released solved it. (after working with Alwil on this)
With the latest version it seems to have come back.
Still running more test to see if I can find out more info on how/why.

Sure thing is that it has to do with the cache of Opera and avast.
It never crashes on any other Opera file, only when scanning cache files.
It could be it only happens if both avast and Opera are trying to access the same file at the same time.
But I’m not sure on this. It looks this way.

Does any detailed error message appear? (faulting module, address, …)

Nope, no specific error msg. Just the general “Opera has encountered…”
No errors in XP’s log file either.

Eddy:
This may be a dumb question, but have you made a bug report? https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/

Is this “Opera has encountered…” a Opera message, or rather Windows?
Not sure, but maybe DrWatson would be able to record some info?

Already running DrWatson, ProcessExplorer and some other (debug) tools. Problem is that (sofar) I can’t invoke the error manually, so I just have to wait till it happen again and then check the logs/reports.

I think I have found some more info about how/why, but I first want to be sure before I mention it here.

Update:

Updated Opera to version 8.52 and also installed version 9 (beta).
Sofar no problems anymore
