Operating System Restart Needed (Revisitted)

Hi,

I know this has been spoken about before, but none of the suggested solutions has worked.

Everytime I boot my PC a message comes up saying “Avast! needs to restart your operating system. Do you want to do it now?”.

I have checked the setup.log file this is the entry for the reboot:

As you can see it says (third line from the end) that a reboot is NOT required.

I have tried deleting the reboot.txt file but to no avail.

I have checked the “PendingFileRenameOperations” registry entry and there are about 126 lines in there. Here are the first few and the last few just so you can see the syntax.

Now I havn’t tried deleting this registry entry because previous posts have said to only delete this if “reboot.txt” is the only entry in there. As you can see I have many other entries as well. Also, these entries never seem to go away. After every reboot, these entries are still there.

I hope someone can shed some light on this because, although the system still works if you ignore the message, it is still quite annoying.

System specs:

Windows XP Professional SP2 + all latest updates
Gigabyte GA-61SME-S2 M/B + Athlon 64 X2 4000 CPU
ATI Radeon X1950PRO GPU + 8.3 Catalyst drivers

I am also running Comodo personal firewall & MaxSecure spyware detector.

Many thanks for any help

Russell

Try uninstall avast than reboot. Is the message “Avast! needs to restart your operating system. Do you want to do it now?” still pop up after you uninstall it? If no than try reinstall it back and see if it fix the problem. If it doesn’t , reply back.

For some reason, avast is not correctly installed in your computer…
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the last version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

In which driver are you trying to install avast? C: ???

Thanks for that, it worked.

I had tried uninstalling Avast from Add/Remove Programs before, but upon re-install it just did the same thing. However, I didn’t know there was a seperate Avast Uninstall utility available.

It seems that there was something lurking about in the registry that was causing it and wasn’t removed using a standard uninstall.

Anyway, many thanks for the help.
