What’s the general consensus for using Avast with Automatic Windows Update? I have my computer set to get updates automatically, but sometimes when I see the notification in my System Tray after about 4 days, I’ll just go ahead and install them.
I’m always paranoid about Windows Installing an update and Avast at the same time kicking in with a definitions update, so I have been disabling Avast when clicking on the Windows Update icon. I know that’s probably not a good thing to do. I turn Avast on after the updates are done, or Avast as you know turns on after a required restart.
I ask this because MS says that you should temporarily disable your AV before installing major things like Windows XP SP-3 or IE updates. So I am getting conflicting messages. Should I just leave Avast on during Windows update unless specifically instructed by the installation instructions to do otherwise?
The only time that I do turn off Avast and would do so is for burning CD’s because I don’t want a bad burn due to an update coming in during that time. The next I disable Avast, I should also disable my Internet Connection.

You probably have the default time setting for the install, and that is 03:00 at night, so if your computer is off then it wont install the updates, i always change it to a time where the computer is on (between after work and bedtime)

Never heard this to be a problem and i never turn off my antivirus for anything
(unless i am doing some exsperiment)
No general consensus, leave it running.
I have rarely if ever disabled avast in almost 6 years that I have had it and that includes windows update.
If you are on-line to get your updates, you need full protection as the time to infection whilst on-line can be measured in minutes. Even worse for those on dial-up, I got hit by Blaster, many, many years ago whilst on line getting security updates after having just installed XP Pro, my AV at the time was AVG and that didn’t bat an eyelid.
So going on-line in the nude or with your security trousers round your ankles isn’t advised.
I don’t burn many CDs and I haven’t turned avast off for that either.
