Opinions of 4.8?

Hi all…

I wrote this before on a couple of other posts but received no reply. Perhaps that was a mistake, if so, please accept my apologies

I left Avast due to problems associated with 4.7 when it was first released and am wondering if 4.8 is worth the migration back. I am currently am using AVG 7.5, which I do like, but have been notified, along with everyone else, that it will no longer be supported by the end of May. And from what I have been reading about version 8, well, let’s just say I won’t be one of the ones who are upgrading.

Is 4.8’s footprint still light? What is the average memory and CPU usage like?

Also, how does one go about making their e-mail address unavailable? I’ve not been able to so far…

Thanks!

Best regards…

First, be assured that your email address is hidden from everyone but you.

If you’re really coming back, you’ll have to get unused to the AVG forum’s “rigidity”. ;D

One sentence answer: avast! 4.8, Avira 8 and AVG 8 have increased resource use over earlier versions, avast! only slightly, avira reasonably, AVG unreasonably.
Take a look here. you might find it interesting.

Hi Vladimyr

I never was a part of AVG’s forum, only Avast’s and AntiVir’s.

Thank you kindly for the link you provided. Having an extra 6 or seven months is nice but it’s possible I may switch over before 12/31/08.
The only point of difference I have is that Avira’s increase borders on unreasonable as well. On a system I used to have, v.7 only took up 5 to 7 MB’s of memory. When I upgraded it to v.8, that shot up to around 36 to 40 MB’s, along with the substantial performance hit on the system!!! :o

Thanks for letting me know about the e-mail as well.

Best Regards…

I’m not sure if, like AVG, Avira used to hide consumption into kernel drivers…

Hi Tech…

It’s certainly possible, although with v.7, 7 MB’s at least felt accurate. :stuck_out_tongue:

Best Regards…

IMO, 4.8 is much better than 4.7 w. built in anti-rootkit/spyware. most bugs have been cleared up in the service pack.

Thank you, fazio, for your input. I have been getting this impression from other sources too.
