Are add-ons like “do not track me” and “track me not” worth it?
Do they do any “real” good?

I ask because polonus posted this http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=127715.msg954930#msg954930 ???

Since they are probably trying to do the same thing as the firefox and other browsers ‘do not track’ option which is a request, which sites can choose to comply or not, I don’t really know if they are worth anything more.

The other thing, tracking would be cookie or script based, so something like cookiemonster for firefox would put a crimp in any cookie tracking plus if you don’t accept 3rd party cookies in your browser settings, tracking is going to be a bit more difficult. Then there is NoScript if said tracking were script based and also RequestPolicy add-on which blocks cross site scripting.

These would up to a point make these add-ons pretty redundant.

Ghostery is not a do not track program. It stops tracking by blocking tracking cookies.

Do not track in Firefox does nothing.

Better Privacy is also a good add on to control Adobe Flash Cookies.

Hi Para-Noid,

Keep it simple and use a script blocker and a good adblocker like ABP
(and know some tracking will not come disabled as by default, like Google Analytics, Omniture, Google+
and associates. This not to upset the main sponsor of browser and extension developers alike)
and then customize these extensions to your liking.
Just see how many unwanted cookies you should clear after a browser session
Clear unwanted cookies 17 out of 22…Vanilla says…
and you know now that the functionality of these extensions is just mascara,
and also consider what is going under the detetction radar of these extensions…
@Johnny2745 - Ghostery is also blocking only part of the tracking going on…

I know that. That’s why I have Adobe blocked. When I do use Adobe Flash Player, I have Better Privacy set to delete Flash Cookies after one second.

Simply use the Chrome browser and you don’t have to worry about Adobe at all.

I use Adblock Plus and DoNotTrackMe within Chrome. Works awesome.

To get some raw idea of what is tracking you, look here: http://www.cookiechecker.nl/
To get more details spider with Screaming Frog http://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/ and look-up the response codes for a given url,
also a netquery dot com scan analysis can give you revealing information…
It is not always easy to get the scope of particular tracking. Let us take this example: http://www.cookiecert.com/cookies-for-ad.360yield.com
How safe is that cookie? Not so good a web rep: http://www.webutation.net/go/review/ad.360yield.com
and see various comments here: http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/ad.360yield.com
so good to have it blocked…see; http://domain.opendns.com/ad.360yield.com (bad badge for web spam)

Thanks guys for the confirmation! 8)

I don’t allow third party cookies in either FF or Chrome. I also use the "do not track in both as well.
The problem with No-Script or Script-No is a couple of sites I use on a regular basis uses scripts.

When all is said and done, “nothing new here I didn’t already know.” 8)
But somebody else might not know.

good infos guys

No Script is great but rather annoying for everyday surfing.
