Yes, indeed… but IMHO, not just it sounds like a wonderful joke, but in the same time it gives you a wonderful message. There is no need to set different prices for if you wish, few variations of the exact same program/OS. They could simply say: “… it’s simple… we have just one version at the price that’s 4-5 times more affordable than what Vista’s price will ever be…”, but this way, they said it all… we give you a freedom of choice at the same price, and the price is incredible low. I am sure if Windows OS was priced something like this, a lot more people would buy it and there would be no need for all those cracks, patches, blacklisted serial numbers/license keys etc. And therefore, what’s even more important, all those viruses/trojans that comes with cracks and patches wouldn’t spread that much and that fast.

This is truly a wonderful example of the wonderful OS with can’t-beat-this-price-even-if-you-want. Well true, no one is perfect… but this move Apple made is true professionalism. With those automatic-windows-updates-without-your-consent (posted by Bob in one of these threads, direct link: http://windowssecrets.com/2007/09/13/01-Microsoft-updates-Windows-without-users-consent ), and those annoying Vista-restarts-after-updating issues (also posted by Bob, link: http://news.zdnet.com/2422-13568_22-157931.html ), MS continues to dig its own hole… and their OS is going deeper and deeper into s**t… ehm… mud ;D While “others” are starting to show their clear mind and with moves like this, future can look just brighter and brighter…

Very good video, thanks for the laughts

Sorry the can’t-beat-this-price-even-if-you-want doesn’t hold up as you ‘can’t’ use it for any price unless you have a Mac it is worthless. You can however, by XP or Vista in whatever flavour and install that on your Mac.

I never though I would see the day when I appear to be sticking up for Microsoft, but the protectionist attitude of Apple so you can’t legally use OSX on a non-mac platform. I mean what do Apple have they to fear, do they think that people will stop buying the Mac and just buy OSX. They are constantly saying the Mac pricing is comparative to a PC and represents good value for money.

If that is correct then they won’t loose existing Mac users and may well make some more money selling OSX into the bargain. Not to mention some of those who buy OSX to test the waters without going to the expense of buying a Mac may well convert to a Mac when it is time to update their existing system, surely a win, win, situation for the orchard.

This is not an attempt to bash the Mac just the simple fact without a Mac OSX is worthless.

Hey david Apple allowed the Mac OS to be installed on any PowerPC machine back in the 90s not just Macs. What they are afraid of is not competing with MSFT (they would win anyway) but they are afraid of competing with other hardware vendors. Apple lost a lot of money back in the 90s during that time where people bought other PowePC based machines and ran Mac OS on it because they lost the hardware revenue. The company nearly went belly up and one of the first things Steve did when he came back was to kill the so called clones and restrict the OS to Apple hardware.

That was how Apple supported itself until the iPod boom (and to this day Mac HARDWARE sales make up nearly half of apple’s revenue)

That is the reason why Apple can offer the OS at such an amazingly low price, they get all the money from hardware sales. And that is also why you wont see them letting you install it on any x86 Machine

For those of you who want to see the entire WWDC 2007 presentation it is here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/wwdc07/
You will need QuickTime 7 of course

Back in the nineties Macs were ridiculously expensive when compared with many PC systems, Apple keep banging on that ‘now’ Macs compare favourable on a like for like basis, so I doubt they would take a bath as in the nineties.

If OSX is so great then there would be many, many only to happy to jump ship from MS Windows to an OS that doesn’t require the user to be a geek like many of the Linux distros. There are times when you still have to get down and dirty in a console/command line mode just to install applications in some Linux distros, you only have to look at the Linux/Unix forum for examples relating to avast.

Your average user just isn’t ready for this level of complexity, if only they could try OSX without having to buy a Mac, then perhaps the orchard might just get some more converts.

They really have only sales of the OS to gain if someone isn’t going to buy a Mac to try OSX then nothing has been lost, but a sale of the OS has been gained. Unless the orchard is so scared of losing existing Mac users but I really don’t see that.

With as you say the iPod and i-range boom, Apple should be more financially secure than they were in the nineties, I really do feel they are missing a trick here. I would most certainly consider purchasing OSX to avoid Vista when I come to replace XP Pro, but there is absolutely no way I would buy a Mac just to be able to try it. I have also built my own systems for a number of years and I like the ability to select components that suit my needs.

Yes and there is another thing. Mac users are just like PC users we enjoy building our own systems. And we have been dying to be able to build our own Mac. But thats just it. that the loss of another hardware sale.

Lets look at Apple’s Q2 2007 Earnings:
http://www.macuser.com/business/the_numbers_game_liveblogging_2.php

And we’re in already, listening to CFO Peter Oppenheimer: Best March quarter in Apple’s history. Very strong demand for Macs and great iPod sales. 88% growth of profits over last year’s quarter. 56% of total revenue from Macs.
(I added the bold)

Thats 56% of their revenue from Mac hardware sales so while the iPod iPhone boom does make a lot of money for apple they are not ready yet to loose that hardware revenue which would undoubtedly take a hit if you could install OS X on any custon built PC or any branded $499 PC. OS sales would make up some of that loss but apple has some nice profit margins on their Macs compared to that of Dell, HP etc. And obviously thats where the majority of their revenue comes from.

Lets say they did open up OS X to non-Apple hardware, they would undoubtedly raise the price well above the current $129 ($69 for Education/students/teachers) to make up for the profit loss and additional development for 3rd party hardware driver support.

Now this will not happen while Steve is at the helm because he realizes how important the HARDWARE sale is to Apple. but when he retires in a few years there is no telling what the new head of Apple will do.

I really understand where your coming from, Id like to build my own system as well, I just know why it wont happen.

I really understand where your coming from, Id like to build my own system as well, I just know why it wont happen.

And why I won’t be buying a Mac any time soon if ever.

Well, that’s exactly what leads to all these different PC configurations problems… all those combinations of different hardware components (where some of them sometimes are totally non-compatible with each other) can bring you more headaches than good. Apple machines were built using good and checked hardware components that simply work with each other. No driver issues for your Video/Sound card that later you read somewhere it actually doesn’t work with your motherboard (too familiar)…

These machines are little bit expensive, but I don’t see Apple sales are going down… there is a bunch of articles/threads/forums on the internet where you can find out that many bitter Windows users simply had enough… and they finally decided to make a switch. I am just one of them and all I can say for now is, even though I still have my laptop (Vista) and my desktop (XP Pro), I am not going back… ever again. I am actually trying to sell my almost brand new Acer laptop and buy a MacBook Pro. That’s how happy I am with my new iMac. Best of all, I am still not running Windows on my Mac, and still I found every single application I used on Windows, and I have it installed here on my Mac… even Microsoft Office.

The thing that makes me so happy is that I can concentrate 110% on building up my creativity, not thinking too much about computer security problems… and still I am not unprotected, I have my ClamXav antivirus (free) installed and I have my Little Snitch (just bough a licence for 28 CAD dollars with lifetime upgrades for free).

I agree however that Apple hardware prices need to go down, that will make everything a lot easier for everybody.

Yeah I can understand why.

I really hope you did not just Buy MS Office as the new 2008 version is coming in January (and will be Intel Native, and support the new office file formats)
and still I am not unprotected, I have my ClamXav antivirus (free)
Good program, Used it before I switched to the avast beta. Still I would not run any Beta software on a Production critical machine

I like David will also be staying with Microsoft despite some of the issues I might have.
All of this brings us back to what I’ve posted about some time back:
When will Apple finally allow us to run their operating system on our Dual Core or Quad computer ???
