As of yesterday my e-mail message started getting stuck in my Outbox. When I tried to send from there I got this error message “The messaging interface has returned an unknown error.” Inbound e-mails were fine. I narrowed down the problem by disabling Avast totally and this allowed the messages to be sent. I then narrowed it down further by disabling only “Scan Outbound Messages” box in Mail Shield. So messages can now be sent and Avast is still working in all other respects. But I still have this outbound mail vulnerability. I should be grateful for any advice on how to fix this.
I have the Free Avast - Version 7.0.1451 (Virus Definition Version 120701-0). I have been running this for a while from an original clean install and updating as recommended. I haven’t knowingly changed any settings since yesterday but they may have been automatic updates.
My OS is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 3.
a shot in the dark… you may try avast repair…wait a couple of minutes and reboot
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Thanks Pondus but this didn’t work. I have juust tried to send a message with the “Scan Outbound Messages” box ticked. No luck. I then tried to send the same message from my Outbox with the same box unticked and this went off OK. So that definitely seems to be the problem.
Thanks Asyn. I looked at the link you posted. Neither my incoming (POP) nor outgoing (SMTP) e-mail accounts are encrypted so I’m not sure this fix applies. But when I look at the SSL accounts tab on the Mail Shield setting there are 5 different SSL accounts. I am not sure what these are as none of them match the two I found on my account settings!
