Outgoing Mail prevented.

Suddenly, my email would not leave the out box. Mail was coming into the computer and my internet connection was working. Along with a technician, we determined that Avast was preventing my outgoing mail from being sent. To remedy the situation, we turned off the scan of out going mail. Why did this happen? Is this an update problem or is it an infection? Does anyone have advice as to how to proceed? Thank you. --DJ

What email client are you using? Are you sending out secure email using SSL or TLS on port 25? Virus scanners (including avast!) can’t scan it because it is encrypted and can’t be read. If you are, search the forum for SSL email for instructions on how to set up a proxy to do it.

It may be an update problem if you have recently updated the avast program and this started happening. Your firewall should have recognised any changes and asked permission. Check that your firewall is allowing ashMaiSv.exe access, if it can’t get out your mail can’t get out.

But if you use Stunnel + OpenSSL you can send the mail (for instance GMail).
You can’t scan the outbound but you can send and scan the inbound.
The SSL port 465 could not be added to the redirected ports on avast smtp settings. You must let only 110 there.
