Sympton: initial Outlook Starts - then instantly shuts down when Avast Banner appears.
After clearing and cleaning Avast5 with utility, running registry FIX (K.U.R.T) del EXTEND.dat removing and reinstalling Outlook:
Outlook starts - can’t connect to Avast Engine - OK - Can’t find Ashoutxt.dll > OK > instant shut down! (ashoutxt.dll is in Avast5 and Avast4 folders nothing else)
Same on two XP machines (wifey - and she is upset at me) anybody got any other bright ideas on how to fix this?? (and get me out of dog house)
I am having the same exact problem with my XP Pro PC as of Friday morning. Could this be an Avast problem from a recent update? I have tried everything I can think of and checked with a family member who is a network administrator. Cannot delete ashouttxt.dll under any circumstances. I am going to copy my pst file from the PC and past in on my laptop and see if Outlook will update and run on the laptop.
I’m sure you’re not happy and are frustrated (I would be if I had your problems :P) but I suggest you wait for some advice from a few of the more learned members of this forum. Due to time zone differences (plus it being the weekend) it may be a few hours before anyone will respond.
Not sure your problems are the same as mine were but it does appear based on search of the Avast forum that Outlook and Avast 5 are having some issues.
I also found that if you can quickly click on the startup window -“today” in my case - you can sometimes stop the outlook shut down. Once caught It runs normally as far as I can determine – but once closed it starts the shut down behavior again.
The only other common factor on my machines is an itunes update – could be connected — might not!!
Something is killing the outlook process – it’s not showing as running at all. Hopefully the guru’s can figure this out - I suspect it’s fairly widespread. :-\
So far I have found no solution to this issue. Avast support has been no help - initially told me it wasn’t their problem - but are looking at it I think - hope!.
I’ve got it now on four computers - two laptops and two desktops - all with XP-PRO sp3 and running Outlook 2K - SP3. They all behave exactly the same.
Avast has changed or corrupted something that is redirecting or diverting Outlook as it tries to open. We just need someone who really understand all the processes outlook goes thru during startup to figure this one out. If you find anything let me know - Thanks DLW
Thanks - looks lie it may be Itunes - they came out with the updates at about the same time. And I updated all of my computers with it. Apple been pretty good with “no problem” updates - guess we all FU sometimes! ;D
Ureaka - removing Apple Mobile Support using the control panel seems to have fixed some or all of the problem with Outlook 2K!!.
My apologies to Avast for all the nasty things I was thinking! Will have to send the support desk
“A BOX O CHOCOLATES” - just like updates - you never know what you gonna get!!
Thanks SDCARGUY for the follow up - hope you get Dads computer back up and running smoothly!
Hi Guys - I’m new to avast forum so please bear with me for while.
I to have the exact same problem - Outlook open momentarily and then closes or crashes - I used to get the avast plug in banner and then it would open.
I tried to run the cmd - del/f %User Profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat that someone else suggested but couldn’t get my computer to recognise the command. I clicked on the Start Button - selected run - typed in cmd and when the command screen opened tyoed in the above after the - c:Documents and Setting\Ken> is this not correct?
Just so you know - I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Pro 2002 Service Pk 3 and email is Outlook 2000. I was on my computer when the avast update came through - My version is 5.0.677. I accepted the update but not to restart immediately. I declined to restart on one or maybe even two other occasions. I turned the computer off hours later - just wondering if this could have had anything to do with it?
I have also seen threads to do with apple itunes 10 - just to confirm I haven’t accepted any updates from apple. It was only after accepting the avast update that I had the problem with Outlook.
I have got around the problem by restoring my computer to 31/08/10, but I would bee keen to have any advice that could resolve the situation and allow me to use the later settings - It’s probably something quite simple. 8)
Like I said earlier the issue I faced was with Itunes. I did learn that Outlook is very sensitive to com addins - some of which can cause real problems.
There is alot of good info on this forum, the itunes forum, and the MS support forum. The folks over at slipstick also seem to know outlook very well!!
