Good afternoon.
SW configuration: Win7/64 - Office 2003 pro - Avast 5 free.
Language (all): US/Engl – Update status: all available updates installed via network.
Any problem to this morning - In the afternoon I updated Avast to 5.1.889 as requested by “blue” window.
After the update ther’s no way to download mails as Outlook 2003 abnormally ends after the first mail (without marking it as succesfully downloaded).
The only way to successfully download mails is to stop the Mail Shield.
Service providers: alice.it and teletu.it
No other problem detected up to now.
Any hint?, thanks
GianP
Since I have never used any version of Outlook, this will serve to “bump” your thread to the top since there should be Outlook users on this forum that can help.
After some more P.D. I was able to trace down the bug (probably) to a bad update from Avast4 to Avast5 (about one year ago, maybe less).
Here are the findings, to help others, if needed:
All my systems are configured, for extra security, with 2 users: Administrator and a “dumb” one, with limited rights (no installs, no write on drive C, etc.). Administrator is logged-in only when needed, i.e. to install applications, to defrag disks, etc. and isn’t used for day-by-day activities (internet navigation and mails included).
Well, looking at the “user”'s Outlook 2003 plug-in window I noticed that the reported Avast plugin was, oddly, for Avast4. The same plug-in for Administrator’s Outlook was for Avast5!
Then I looked at the Program Files\Alwil Software directory where I found two(!) subdirs Avast4 and Avast5.
Avast5 has some files in it, I presume the “right” install; while Avast4 had a single dll (ashOutxt.dll) in it.
Therefore I thought my installation was, in some way, corrupded and performed the actions suggested in other forum threads: Remove Avast5, full cleanup with aswclear5.exe (twice, for avast4 & avast5), and reinstall the last Avast5 ver/rel.
BTW I had to manually delete the Program Files\Alwil Software (empty) directory that wasn’t erased by aswclear5.
My mails are now downloading as before the last update - problem fixed!
Many thanks for Avast free!
