I have been getting this message fairly regularly (at least once a week) - Outlook experienced a serious problem with the avast! antispam add-in.
I have done some searching but am yet to find a solution (or cause of the problem). Like others, I am worried about disabling and losing my protection…hence my posting here.
I am using the paid product (version 5.1.889) and really hope there is an answer to this problem. Thanks in advance to those who respond.

I am sorry to hear that you have issues. In order for us to be able to diagnose the problem we will need a bit more information.
What Windows version are you running? 32/64 bit?
Enable debug logging in Avast|Settings|Maintenance
Restart Outlook. Keep running it normally until it eventually crashes
Send us the log file (asOutExt.log) and latest crash dump files if (unpXXXXX.mdmp) they exist
The location for these files can be either of:
c:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Vista/Win7)
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\ (Win2K/WinXP)
(Please note that you might need to enable the “Show hidden files and folders” option)
Go to Outlook and have a look what add-ins are installed. There should be 2 by Avast (one of them in the “COM Add-ins” section) and possibly others. Please list them here. We will be able to take it from there.
