Help!!! Avast won’t let me send out my mail. My ISp provides an anti-virus program. How can I disable Avast for my outgoing mail? Thankx anyone. Trickie

Are you saying you have two resident anti-viruses installed ?
If so this can and often does lead to conflict, what is your ISPs anti-virus program or is it just an email scanning service done at ISP level ?

See image, however, avast doesn’t block email (firewalls can block ashMaiSv.exe, that may seem as if avast is blocking), please give detailed information on the errors/warnings (or post a screenshot) you get when you try to send email.

What is your ISP?
Is the email being sent using SSL (secure encryption) ?

When I want to send mail, I get a message that says “your SMPT is not responding. Do you want to wait 60 seconds” or something like that. Also, I get an error box that gives all sorts of numbers and says my adresses are not valid. I suppose by now you can tell I am a newbie. My ISP is corcomm. They have an e-mail based anti-virus program that scans and traps viruses. I want Avast for my web browsing. Is this a server problem? Thankx, Trickie

Well the all sorts of numbers could be helpfull to us, especially if the all sorts of numbers were 127.0.0.1, a screenshot would be helpfull.
They have an e-mail based anti-virus program that scans and traps viruses.
But does that you installing a program on your PC, if not I would recommend you also use avast's email scanner as it can give you an indication of some malware is using your computer to send out spam (this act can get you banned by some ISP).

I had a similar problem when using an anti-virus scanner provided by my ISP.
The only way to allow Outlook Express to send / receive e-mail was to disable the internet mail provider in Avast.
Disabling the ISP scanner did not stop the problem at all.

To fully resolve the problem (and one that allowed me to activate Avasts internet mail provider again) I uninstalled my ISP scanner and now just use Avast for anti-virus with Avasts’ internet mail provider started again.

I won’t call this an ISP scanner, but an antivirus recommended by your ISP.
You were using two antivirus at the same time… so the conflict blocked you.

Well, besides the 2 antivirus running, could be the firewall blocking ashMaiSv.exe (avast! Mail Scanner), for instance…

I also have the problem with Outlook Express.
I use Windows 2000 SP4 with IE/OE 5.5 and have just installed Avast 4.6 Home edition.

When attempting to send or receive mail in OE I receive:

The server responded with an error. Account: ‘mail.bellsouth.net’, Server: ‘mail.bellsouth.net’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 205.152.59.17 (205.152.59.17:110), connect error 10061’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

However, OE send and receive mail if I stop the On-Access Protection … what must I do to have anti-virus protection in OE?

I have uninstall and reinstall both IE/OE and Avast 4.6, also run a Chkdsk and also reapply SP4, without result.

Yes, I did, as I am aware of the use of the search botton. I also read the Home edition FAQ on Email as well, that is why I added my post to this thread. as I have not discovere anything that has resolved my particular issue, so you will direct me there, please, if you are aware the workaround, and then the link will be here in topic for all OE users to find.

My understanding is that the email configuration for Avast Home in Windows2000 is intended to be transparent, without user intervention. Since this isn’t happened, I thought the moderators might wish to consider it.

No. It is a new Sony Vaio TX750 with very little softwares added yet. Kerio/Tiny firewall is there, and I have allowed TCP both ways for OE.

OE works fine if I turn off Avast.

may sound like a silly question but have you allowed Avast email scanning access via your firewall also?

o me. You have solved it. in Kerio, I scrolled to the bottom and there was Avast with red X’s on the allowed protocols. That was brilliant, tednelly! :smiley:

Ordinarily, in Kerio firewall, a new application asking for network access cause a pop-up, asking for permit or deny.

I wasn’t using the two at the same time - the ISP anti-virus scanner was disabled and i only used it for a firewall. I uninstalled the ISP program completely now and all the problems have gone.

But, point taken.

David…the post by Mrs Catgut has spelled out what sort of message I get when trying to send mail. When I go to the “server” window after I open OE, I get the default numbers 127.0.0.1 & when I put in mail.core.com, my mail comes through. I must do this each time I open OE. I use two PCs. One with Win 98 (which I like) and the other with XP(which I don’t like) This happens on both PCs. I tried to stop the email program on the on access protection control menu, but each time I boot up, it’s there again.

You should have:

pop3 server= smtp server = 127.0.0.1
username = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com
smtp authentication enabled and the username there = mail.server.coml#user or mail.server.com#user@server.com

For the Windows Xp computer you don’t need to change anything in your settings: scanning is transparent.
