Outlook/Exchange Icon Appears/Disappears Repeatedly

Under Windows/XP running Office 2007, I see an Outlook-like icon with a blue ball in the system tray from time to time. If you hold the mouse over it, a tool tip pops up claiming “avast! MS Outlook/Exchange provider is working…”. The problem is this icon appears and disappears repeatedly and rapidly: frequently five or more times in a second. It shifts all the other icons back and forth so that the whole system tray is virtually unusable while this is happening. (I have a suspicion that it might be triggered by the new Desktop Search engine scanning past e-mails that might cause Avast to scan each message.)

How do I permanently shut off this notification icon?

Left click the a blue icon. Expand the options (Details button) if needed.
Go to Outlook provider at left and click Customize button.
Advanced tab of settings.
Uncheck show icon when scanning mail.
