Outlook/Exchange provider

Hi:

When I look at the Outlook/Exchange provider it says: “The provider is waiting for a subsystem to start”. How do I make it work? I don’t think that my emails are being checked.

Thanks.

Are you using Outlook Express as your mail client or Microsoft Outlook - they are two different programs?

The Outlook/Exchange provider of avast only works with Microsoft Outlook.

If you use Microsoft Outlook the provider should start automatically when you open the mail program…

if you use Outlook Express your mails should be scanned by the Internet Mail provider…

Thanks guys!

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)

I too recently noticed that my Outlook/Exchange provider (Version 4.8-1296) is not active when Microsoft Outlook is open (yes, not Outlook Express). Only 6 of 7 providers are currently active.

When I first started using Avast (Version 4.7) in May 2008, an Avast window would briefly appear just before Outlook 2003 opened to let me know that the Outlook/Exchange provider was engaging. All 7 providers would be running.

At some point in time–I cannot say whether before or after I upgraded to Version 4.8 about a month ago–the window no longer would appear.

I looked for a switch in Avast and Outlook 2003 to correct the problem, but did not find (or recognize) one. So, I visited Avast.com to find a solution and found the following FAQ Q&A–the answer repeated among the replies to mkarmali (thanks for starting the topic).

"Q: The provider of ‘On-Access Scanner’ called ‘Outlook/Exchange’ is still waiting for a subsystem to start. Is anything wrong?

“A: No. This provider runs only when MS Outlook (not Outlook Express!) or MS Exchange is running. If you don’t use any of these programs, the provider doesn’t run either.”

Other related FAQ Q&As alluded to a bug in an earlier Avast version that caused the same problem.

Based on my experience (admittedly one datum), there seems to be a bug with Version 4.8 at least with respect to Outlook 2003. Perhaps there is no problem with Outlook 2007, or there is some switch that I have not found to correct the problem.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

David

Is the plug-in in Outlook actually running and not disabled ?

Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items

Confirm that the avast Outlook/Exchange provider is started ?
That would account for 6 of 7 running.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

The previously reported situation still exists.

I went into MS Outlook Tools → Options → Other → Advanced Options → Add-in Manager.

The list of add-ins shows “avast! 4” with a checked box by it. It seems to be added in.

Avast’s O/E Provider still appears dormant (i.e., nonfunctional). Clicking on it pulls up a tabbed box titled “Resident task settings”. Are there settings that could be changed to correct the situation? I do not know what are the “normal” settings.

Thanks again.

David

I don’t know if even with the add-in manager plug-in checked there might still might be a disabled entry. Sorry I can’t be more helpful as I don’t use MS Outlook.

I went into MS Outlook Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced Options -> Add-in Manager.

Interesting but that is not the place David recommended you look.

Please try as David recommended:

Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items

David and Alan,

Thanks. You were both correct. The provider was “disabled because [it] prevented Outlook from functioning correctly”. Enabling and restarting Outlook restored the O/E Provider to functioning status.

David

I am glad that David’s advice steered you on the path to getting it working.

You’re welcome.

I just find it strange that Outlook 2003 would not have some means of indicating an installed plug-in was disabled (something like greyed out) as many like yourself would just look there and think everything is as it should be (but not working) and not check the disabled items area.

Thanks David!!
I am not a computer person at ALL! Well, kind of! But not the technical stuff!
I knew I had a problem but no one I knew could tell me how to fix it!
I was so excited I found your post!

Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

Wish I could have told you personally! :-* A big THANKS again!!!

No problem, glad I could help.

Glad that you also found the search function, a vast amount of information on the forums for those who look ;D

Welcome to the forums.

Have used the online forums before, but never for myself, and never so excited to send a “thank you” back!

Ok, remember newbie…help again??

Now noticed my e-mail address is readily available, how do I change that? I have the box checked that says “hide e-mail address from public”, but when you click on the mail pic my e-mail address pops up in Outlook.

Plus when you click on me-sue it shows it there as well.

Don’t want to be recieving any more junk mail than I already do!?!

ARGH!

Thanks…me again

You are the only one that can see it and likewise in your profile you only can see it.

Relieved! Thanks again!

You’re welcome.
