Outlook Express 6 and Avast 4.7 problem

Hi,

I have been using Avast for a few months now with no problems. I use Outlook Express 6 for my email and have it configured to download from two Yahoo email accounts as well as an email account held with my internet service provider.

Recently Avast updated and I can no longer collect mail from my internet service provider, although I can still collect mail from the two Yahoo accounts.

However if I terminate/stop the Avast Internet Mail Provider I can download email from my ISP without any problems.

Also, if I leave the provider running but turn off scanning inbound email in the Customize POP resident task settings dialogue box I am also able to download mail - but of course this partly defeats the object!

Can anyone please offer some advise?

Thanks,

Casper

Is your Yahoo account POP3 or do use some interface to convert it from webmail to pop3 ?

I’m assuming POP3 so answere these questions.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and check for email again, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

The above is likely as there has recently been a program update and your firewall should have asked permission for the changed providers.

David,

What actually happened was that Avast updated recently and my wife who was using the computer at the time said that afterwards when she went to collect her email she pressed “no” to something… I assumed this was to do with a setting for Avast.

In hindsight it was probably the firewall asking for permission to access the server.

So on your advice I returned the firewall to default settings. Then rechecked email and it asked for permission to which I said “yes” and all works fine now. Thank you very much!

Moral of story… oops, think I had better not go there!!!

Casper

Which firewall do you use?
If you delete the entry for ashmaisv.exe and download email again, then you can answer yes…
But, as you’ve said, you’ve discovered the solution. Welcome to avast forums.

That is almost certainly what happened.

Welcome to the forums.

This account of the problem suggests that for your Yahoo mail you are either:

  1. using a secure connection to a Yahoo provided POP server

-or-

  1. using a Webmail to POP converter like YPops or FreePops.

I just wanted to be sure that you are aware that, either way, your Yahoo mail is not being scanned by avast. There are options for making sure that it is if you are interested.
