Outlook Express 6 on Avast 4.8

So sorry if this has been asked previously, but I currently use Microsoft Outlook for my personal emails, and Avast works well with it, but am I able to use Outlook Express 6 as an alternative Email client?

Reason for asking is that I prefer Outlook Express over Microsoft Outlook, but when I try O.E6 I don’t see that is it scanning anything.

I think it must have worked previously, but as the ISP have indicated that due to a future email upgrade then we need to use secure ports, and the link below actually confirms this.

However we now know that Outlook Express won’t be scanned if secure ports are used, but my question now is will Microsoft Outlook work with secure ports?

avast has a plug-in which runs within MS Outlook, so it can scan email content before it is sent or received (as it isn’t encrypted at that point).

You can also use STunnel to act as a third party, which allows avast to scan that, though it isn’t an easy set-up.

I think I already have the outlook/exchange plug in as I notice that Avast scans the message body, does that mean it scans the attachments too?

It isn’t just scanning the body, it scans the email which presumably includes attachments. Why not do your own test.

Using http://www.gfi.com/emailsecuritytest/ you can send yourself an email with eicar attachment.

Thanks for that, I used the service and kept all the boxes ticked, and they all seemed to be protected in some way, so that’s good to know.

You’re welcome.

So I guess the answer to your question is, yes avast scans your attachments ?

Yes it would seem so.

I kept all the boxes ticked for that test when really I should have only ticked the one for the eicar virus.
