Outlook Express/Avast 4.7 problem

As suggested by DavidR I am moving this to a new thread

Here is the error on my machine XP/OS and problem in Outlook Express:
The server responded with an error. Account: ‘pop.peoplestel.net’,
Server: ‘pop.peoplestel.net’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-
ERR Cannot connect to POP server 137.118.25.69 (137.118.25.69:110),
connect error 10061’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC90

Nothing has changed on my ISP end or the setting in OE (unless avast made changes without notifing me).
The problem just started yesterday after Avast did an update. Another interesting point is that it is only affecting OE and not Outlook office running on the same machine connecting to the same ISP. I really think there is a new bug in the Internet mail in Avast! And sofar from what I read it is limited to OE. If I turn Internet mail scanning off OE works just fine. I think Avast needs to roll back the clock until they get this bug fixed. Just my 2 cents

I think this is unrelated to your issue and as mentioned in your other topic post, I think you should create a new topic and we can try to deal with ‘your’ problem.

I doubt it is a bug in the Internet Mail provider with OE as it would be swamping the forums as OE is still a very popular email client. I have avast and OE for almost 4 years and no problems.

avast has no need to change your email settings with XP to be able to scan your email.

avast does not change anything on XP systems.

At the same time? I mean, Outlook can connect at the same time OE can’t?

Not identical times but click send and receive on OE and I get the error. Click send and receive and Outlook Office and it will fectch the mail with no error. Same machine and the same settings in each. I have even tried to change the settings and OE still has an error message. I also run ZA firewall but turning off or on the mail scanning doesn’t affect either way. Only turning off internet mail scan in Avast corrects the problem.

Hi, I think we came across something very similar to this in the past. the problem was with ZA. (I know you tried it with ZA off. please bear with me)

Try removing ashmaisv.exe from ZA. Check your mail, ZA should ask for permission. Grant permission and see what you get.

A google search for the connect error 10061 returns many hits, http://www.google.com/search?q=connect+error+10061. Some of these would tend to support the firewall blocking that oldman mentions, so give what he suggests a try and report.

Outlook works differently with avast a) it uses the Outlook/Exchange plug-in, b) it doesn’t use the Internet Mail provider if you have the outlook/exchange plug-in enabled.

So with (a) avast is operating from within outlook so no additional firewall permission would be required as it is still using outlook to send and receive email.

Oldman, you are correct! It is a ZA and Avast compatibility problem. I can turn ZA off and it has the same affect (as turning off scanning in Avast)…OE will pick up mail.
Now I am sorry but I don’t completely understand your instructions. How do I remove ashmaisv.exe from ZA. I googled and found some topics on how to remove from Windows but not ZA.

Thanks again for your help!

Problem fixed  If anyone has this problem assoicated with ZA/Avast email compatibility here is the fix.
Open ZA>go to programs>go to programs tab> find Avast email scan> in the row for access> change the ?? to trusted (two green checkmarks).
Test again> problem resolved OE will have access to email server

Glad you sorted it out. I haven’t seen a ZA interface for so long, I probably couldn’t have told you where to look. One of the problems with ZA,was it’s inability to remember settings. Mind you, this only happened on some computers.

Thanks oldman I wouldn’t have figured it out without you help. Also thanks to DavidR

Your welcome, glad you have it resolved now.
