The last few days I have been unable to open Outlook Express (v.6) unless I am already online.
Could this be anything to do with updating to build 4.0.211 ?
It starts to open, but then asks me to Log-on, which it has never done before. It accepts the Log-on, but then nothing else happens, and Ctrl-Alt-Del shows it as “Not responding”.
If I go online there is no more problem, but sometimes I just want to read an old message, or write a new one before connecting up to send it
I use a POP3 server. Does this answer your question about how my server is configured ? (I am not much more than a novice )
OS is Windows 98.
“Not responding” programme is Outlook Express.
Can’t be sure whether the problem ties up exactly with updating to build 211, but as both have been in the last few days I now wonder whether there is a link.
The box that pops-up says “Logon - mail.tesco.net. Please enter your user name and password for the following server”
The password box is auto-completed.
I have now noticed that if I click on the OK box quite quickly it leads to the “Outlook Express not responding” situation as described above.
If I leave it without clicking, the program opens up as usual, but once it is open if I click OK in the Logon window, it (the Logon window) disappears and quickly returns again. If I click Cancel all is well.
So I have found a way around the original problem, but why is it behaving like this ???

There are no errors.
WSAAccept not loaded - it means that you have neither Win2000 nor WinXP.
POP Server settings changed - it is normal loading settings from ini during initialization
crowterman:
In your log there is an error while connecting POP server. Avast connects to POP server as lately as OE authenticates (there is server address in your modified username). So when avast cannot connect to server, OE fails to authenticate and displays that dialog. In previous version avast simply closed the connection in this situation and OE displayed message “Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection …”. Did you encounter this ?
As for OE misbehaving after it is started, you say that you want to use OE offline but you probably use the option “Send and receive messages at startup” in OE ?
Thanks, Vojtech, with your help light is beginning to dawn
Yes, now you mention it my old version did display the "unexpectedly terminated connection " message under these circumstances.
And Yes, the “Send and receive messages at startup” is selected. I have now de-selected it and, though I have not tested it off-line, I can see that this has probably solved my difficulty.
Superb program–Superb back-up. Many thanks again ;D
