Outlook express Pop3 error

When I check messages I get the following error:
The server responded with an error. Account: ‘mail.optonline.net’, Server: ‘mail.optonline.net’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded(pass:50, processes:ScanningProcess.exe[49], msimn.exe[1]), there is a collision with another program’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

After I disable Avast and check messages again they come through fine. Please help.

You’ll have to edit avast4.ini section [MailScanner] adding (or editing) the line IgnoreProcess.
E.g.:

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=mybad.app,ccPxySvc.exe

You can increase that limit of concurrent connection, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11788.0#msg100032

Here is your culprit ScanningProcess.exe[49] taking up 49 connections with msimn.exe taking the other one leaving no connections for ashMaiSv.exe.

ZoneAlarm Security Suite:

This "scanningprocess.exe" is a process used by zonealarm's av component ...
Also see http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/scanningprocess/

So effectively you have two resident av scanners running you should disable/uninstall the ZoneAlarm Security Suite AV component.

The problem is not the number of connections- no matter what number I change the max # of connections to I get the same error. I believe it has something to do with Zone alarm 7.0. I disabled the mail scanning in Zone alarm and got the same Pop3 error. I’ve also gone through the Zone alarm tutorial and changed to the manual proxy configuration to a local host and port 12080 but that didn’t seem to help. So, my only resort was to disable the Avast mail scanning protection. This seems to work. I would prefer to have Avast do the mail virus scanning but if it doesn’t let me get the mail there’s nothing I can do. Thanks for the help.

Did you boot after changing the number?

Port 12080 is used by avast WebShield in non-transparent configurations. It’s not used by Internet Mail provider to scan email. I believe disabling ZA is not being enough…

Is there a way to have a customized installation of ZA without the email scanning?

Did I say the problem was the max number of connections, ‘no I didn’t.’

I said that the problem was with ScanningProcess.exe, if you changed the max number to 100 it would take 99 of them, you have a second AV installed and running and it is causing problems. Your error message is quite clear in that regard “there is a collision with another program,” so even if you have disabled the email scanning in ZA the ScanningProcess.exe would appear to still be running and capturing the connections even if it isn’t scanning.

I would suggest you uninstall ZA Security Suite and reboot, now do a custom install and don’t install the AV element and reboot.
