Outlook Express Problems

Hi all,
Just installed Avast Home and I cannot send emails using outlook express unless I right click the avast icon and select “stop on-access protection” I have read other posts similar to this although not the same and haven’t seen any fixes. Am I stuck always having to “turn off” protection before sending? Here is a screen shot of the error I get if I don’t “turn off on-access protection” feature. Thanks for any help.

What OS do you have?
What is under [MailScanner] in avast4.ini?
What other security software do you have installed?
Do you (or did you) have another av? If so which one?

XP Home

[MailScanner]
PopRedirectPort=110
SmtpRedirectPort=25
ImapRedirectPort=143
NntpRedirectPort=119
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1
AutoRedirect=1

Spybot Search and Destroy and I did have Norton, but Norton did not have this issue. Norton has been removed using add/remove files and then the computer restarted. Thanks for help.

Ah, think I know what the problem is.
Removing nav with add/remove is not enough.
You als need to remove many other things from nav before installing another av.
There are various threads that tell you how to completely remove nav on this board.
I’m sure you can find one with the search option.

  1. remove avast
  2. remove norton completely
  3. reboot
  4. clean the registry
  5. reboot
  6. install avast

That should solve it.
Ofocurse do all this while not connected to the net.
You don’t to be connected without a av installed :slight_smile:

Ugh!
Nice try dude, but that didn’t do it. Well at least I ahve norton completely removed now, but still have the same error trying to send email through outlook express. Any other thoughts?

Ah, I overlooked something.
You are using a ssl mail server.
There is no av that can handle that.
I think there is a thread explaining more about it. Let me see if I can find it.

There is no av that can handle that.
Never had a problem with Norton and outlook express. Never had a problem with mcafee or AVG-antivirus and outlook express. Seems Avast is the only loser here. You know how many people use sympatico for there ISP and I'm the only problem case? Seems unlikely. If anyone else has a solution please help. Thanks.

I agree that avast is not handling this well (I have the impression, but have not tested, that this is better handled in AVG - but AVG’s email configurations are more complex that avast’s - for example see the sticky thread under my userid at the start of the AVG email forum).

See this post:

and later in the same thread:

You could use STunnel to allow avast to scan your encrypted mail (inbound and outbound), but as I point out in the second link you will probably run into issues if you want to scan non-encrypted SMTP mail using port 25 and encrypted SMTP mail also using port 25.

Had to delete avast and installed AVG, everything is working fine, ingoing and outgoing mail. I suggest to anyone using my type of connection with outlook express to not even bother with avast. AVG seems to be working just fine, and it’s been 3 days. Thanks for the previous help.
