Outlook malfunctioning since upgrading to Avast 7

Since upgrading from Avast 6 to Avast 7.0.1426, I’ve had trouble sending and receiving emails in Outlook 2010 (Windows 7). The most frequent error message I get is 10060. I’ve searched these forums and the web in general, and it seems to be a fairly common problem. I’ve tried every solution suggested, adjusting port numbers and SSL settings in both Outlook and Avast, but nothing is fully succeeding.

Now I have my Outlook accounts set to “encrypted connection: none” and the Avast setting as “encryption: SSL” But the port numbers change automatically when I select SSL, and don’t match the port numbers in Outlook any more. If I set Avast encryption to ‘none’ two of my email accounts function in Outlook, but Hotmail still doesn’t. Besides, does that mean I’m cancelling Avast’s encryption? Any advice will be gratefully received.

After installing Avast the emails stopped coming in. Avast proposed to set the email encryption to none. Still no mails. back to STARTTLS, nothing.
My Mail server does not support SSL, so STARTTLS is the best security.
After I switched off “Mail Shield” in Avast everything was up and running again.
So something seems to be rather strange about the Mail Shield.

Thanks, Pondus, but it didn’t work for me, just changed the error messages. But I’ve solved the problem now - I uninstalled Avast 7 and reinstalled version 6 - all back to normal :slight_smile:

I have TB 11.0.1 running on my system with POP email (incoming port is set at 110, no security) and never had an issue upgrading from Avast Antivirus Free 6 to Avast 7. Was your Thunderbird email working with Avast 6 before of is Avast 7 the first time you installed Avast?

Gillest, is yours Hotmail? My other two email accounts (Yahoo and O2) worked okay once I’d followed the Avast instructions about SSL, it was just Hotmail that I still had problems with.

is the Hotmail account sett up as POP3 ?..or the normal deltasync http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeltaSync
does your hotmail work if you disable avast mailshield ?

It’s POP3 into Outlook. When I disabled mail shield it gave a different error message, but if I juggled the settings I could get it to work without mail shield. With mail shield off, what worked was setting the hotmail account in Outlook to POP3 port 995/SSL, SMTP port 587/TLS. In Avast 6, the Outlook hotmail settings are POP3 port 110/none, SMTP port 25/none.
