Outlook right click menu disappeared after last update

I have XP SP3. After the last update (10.3.2223 on about 07-19-15), in Outlook, if you select a message in the in box and right click, the menu does not come up. If you select more than one message, it will work, but not for a single message. I uninstalled Avast and the menu came right back. I tried turning the mail shield off, but that didn’t work. Strange. Any thoughts?

Same deal with me, starting with 2223 and now 2225. Since 2225 came out so quickly after 2223, I figured it was a fix for this (not). Win XP, Outlook 2000. Not only right-click gone (as in marking an item read or unread, etc.), but double-clicking on an existing Calendar event produced error (Can’t open; Msg Interface returned unknown error). But strangely, not all calendar items. Disabling all shields, then opening Outlook, does not help. Pretty sure this is Avast; only updates I’ve done on three different machines.

I submitted a ticket. That won’t go anywhere. It’s definitely in the program starting with 10.2.2223, they admitted that. I had to install an older version. That works. They gave me 10.2.2218. I’ve got XP SP3, Outlook 2002. No right click menu. It’s odd that it works if I highlight more then one item though. Anyways, I wouldn’t hold your breathe on this. You’ve got an old machine and it seems to be kind of isolated. As these anti-virus programs get larger and larger, I notice a pattern. In the past, I’ve dropped Symantec and AVG for small things like this that just seem to keep adding up. But then again, there are still 250 million computers using Windows XP. And a lot of these people are going to be buying Windows 10 in the next couple of years. I wouldn’t want to alienate them now.

It makes no sense to me that Avast would be interfering with this type of Outlook functionality when it’s supposed to just be scanning the messages for viruses. But you’ve proved it is Avast causing the problem. With a previous Avast upgrade, there were several issues I had with certain vendor webpages and eventually they got fixed after posting the problem. So, I have hope. I will try downloading an Avast version prior to 2223. Did you run avastclear in Safe Mode before installing the older version?

filehippo download of 2218 retrieves current version! Found it on FileHorse. Downloading now (haven’t tried it yet, but size of 146MB is correct, not the 151MB file from filehippo).

Below is the link for version 2015.10.2.2218. The Avast technician provided.

No I did not use Avast Clear, just add | remove programs. That worked for me.

We need to keep these posts going so it remains an open issue and gets attention.

Restoring old version 2218 fixed the outlook problems of no right-click, inability to modify calendar items and probably other things. I ran avastclear in safe mode to remove 2223/2225 and after reboot, installed 2218. Yes, Avast, please fix this!

Wondering if anyone can confirm that this problem with Outlook and the right click menu disappearing, has been resolved with some recent updates? It began with program version 10.3.2223 and pertained to Outlook circa 2003.

Fixed in the latest version (10.4.2233): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176600.0
