have started using avast and seem fairly good but if p2p is enabled and I’m using utorrent my PC seems too hang run slow etc,if i disable p2p shield all is OK will the torrents being download still be checked by the web shield and are u aware of this problem this is on uttorents FAQ cheers bazer
That would depend on the file type being downloaded and the standard shield sensitivity and settings, which you don’t mention.
If utorrent has an option to scan downloads with your AV, this is the file to use. Assuming that you installed avast! in the default folder, this is the path needed to scan downloads, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe
all the settings are medium or standard i normay d/l mp3 files or flac and rar also by default all p2p shied settings in custum mode types are ticked shall i just tick utorrent thanks for the responce
Because of the way utorrent works it downloads lots of slmall parts and each of those parts is going to get scanned, that can have an effect such as you mention. There are those who use utorrent that ‘don’t’ have the P2P Shield enabled and use the method suggested to scan only the completed file on download. This may provide a reasonable compromise between performance and protection.
You can do a forums search for utorrent and I’m sure you will see some of these topics.
I personally don’t use any P2P application so I can’t be of much practical help.
Welcome to the forums.
Having spent some time at the start of the year investigating how the Instant Messaging scanner works and having spent a bit of time on P2P issues over the past couple of years I am fairly sure of a few things:
- the P2P and InstMsg scanners work the same way
- they scan any writes performed by the program being scanned
- they are not controlled by any other provider level setting (including their own) and are not subject to control by any exclusion list in avast.
- to answer an original question here: No, the Webshield plays no part at all in scanning file transfers by utorrent (except by chance if the peer tells you to connect to the peer on port 80).
Therefore if the P2P or InstMsg program selected is doing lots of writes, whether of files it is transferring or of its own temporary or logging files they will all be scanned and the volume of those writes will determine the scanning overhead. It would be well not to allow logging files of the application to become very large over time (as they can do in some of these products).
I confirm this: I have \config\statistics.ini file into avast Exclusion list and it’s being scanned by P2P provider.
The help file says, on contrary, that Exclusion list affects all avast providers, which does not seem to be true.
It’s a pity that the exclusion list does not work…
