I have the P2P shield running, but don’t understand what it is and what it’s doing. Could someone give me a brief definition, or point me to one? Is this a shield I should keep running? Thanks for any help…Jim
Why not start reading and learn what it is and make yourself familiar with Avast?
start > programs > Avast > help
If you don’t know what P2P is, it is unlikely that you need the shield running. P2P (peer 2 peer) is file sharing over the internet, usually swapping music, but it can be anything really.
You can Terminate the provider if you don’t need it or you can remove it using add remove program, change and select/intick the P2P box.
I generally am very supportive of saying RTM, but in this case entire sum of P2P Shield knowledge in the help is:
“checks files downloaded using common peer-to-peer (file sharing) programs.”
So I think in this case its a case of WTM - Avast please Write The Manual or at least answer the question in the forum. See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=72829 for why I think its important to understand what it really does.

I would generally have started by reading the date of the post (over 6 years ago) before posting, as there seems little value in reviving the dead.
Sorry, I saw the March and missed the date. Thought it coincided with the other thread.
Still, in an ironic twist, it seems the best doc I can find is also six years also and the manual still only has a single line explaining explaining the P2P Shield.
Well I don’t use the P2P Shield as I don’t use p2p applications, so I no longer have it installed.
Whilst the general description is pretty basic, what it is doing is also pretty basic, it scans your p2p traffic stream. But I guess you are looking at something different to me as the Help Center for the P2P shield has additional Expert Settings info.
But this really shouldn’t be continued in this pre-historic topic.
