"package is broken"

Every time I open my browser, either Outlook Express, or Mozilla Firefox, I geet a red flag that the update failed, and that “the package is broken”. I went to help, and was given a route to add to the def. file, but that didn’t help. Any ideas?

Do you mean each time you OPEN your browser and email you receive an error message?
Which is your operational system?

Welcome to the Forum DonRP,
Do you currently or have you recently had another
Antivirus program installed on your computer?

TECH,
Each time I boot up my computer, either from off or from hibernate, the red flag, and the Avast notice that update failed and “package is broken” - I don’t have to be going to e-mail.

It would have be nice if you had answered this question also.

If you change (or add) AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds value into the [InetWD] section of avast4.ini file you could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.

Can you test?

To Bob 3160 and TECH
I have Windows XP. I had Norton antivirus up to December 2005. I don’t know how to find avast4.ini file. I don’t think I can “test”. Thanks for your replies.
DonRP

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini file

Open it in Notepad, add that info, save the file, boot and see what happens… this is the test! 8)

When did this problem with avast! start? How long ago?
Have you always had a problem or is this something recent?

Another link worth looking at which is a program removal tool, which can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

I suggest you download this tool, run it and reboot. It would probably be best to uninstall avast, boot and reinstall it, that should give you a clean install and hopefully resolve the problem.

I have tried C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\ and there is no Avast4.ini file there. ??? Could it have a different name?

It is there without it avast wouldn’t work, you can probably only see avast4 without an extension, in the type of file column you will see it as Configuration Settings.
Ensure you uncheck the option to Hide extensions for known types, windows explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, see image.

No. It should be there or your avast installation is corrupted.

the file is:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini
Providing you installed the program to it’s default folder.

I have exactly the same problem everytime I start the computer. the red flag and package is broken warning appears. It started yesterday 24-3-06. I ran an immediate scan and a message reporting the flag was found in the log file. But no virus was found everytime I scanned. everything appears to working fine. what can I do about this message which keeps appearing?
I should add I am a novice but I have followed the on screen advice.

So I now have the red flag on screen which reads"an error has occurred while attempting to update. Click here for more info. When I right click I am told the package is broken. In the log I am told it first occurred 25-3-06. On the anti virus set up i found a message
"found tried to download servers.def but failed with error 0x20000011
What does this mean, what can I do now?

I should add that its windows xp and no other anti virus system is installed.

Welcome to the forums, tamashin.

BUT, was there another av installed before Avast and then uninstalled?
And if so, what was the prior av?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

The computer is brand new. there were no other Av installations. Incidently, I can manually download updates without any problem and when I scan no infected files are found.
