I’ve downloaded avast on my Mac. I have ‘parallels’ installed. Is it necessary to install avast on each of the parllelos Virtual Machines as well as the host Mac?

Yes you will need Protection on each virtual machine in Parallels. There are free editions of the Linux and Windows versions though.
