I’ve installed the home edition running XP pro on an Opeteron dual CPU.
When I click on the desktop or menu icon it I get the skinned start antivirus scan screen.
I can get to the “on access protection screen” or the list of resident providers.
Also there is no icon in the system tray or VRDB.
I’ve tried removing and re-installing but no luck.
Anybody any ideas?

Do you have or did you have another av installed? If so what was it and how was it uninstalled?
What other security programs are installed?
When you uninstalled avast, did you also use the avast removal utility?
I installed with windows add/remove programs for previous A/V progs and Avast
I had zone alarm suite but the licence expired.
Tried free antivir but didn’t like the interface Did not use removal tool on Avast.
So I went back to Avast, which I prefer but seemed to use more resources than Antivir.
I think Ill do a fresh windows install anyway.
Its about time I removed the garbage.

Now its ok
