Passport/Driver's license scan requirement for Avast Internet Security

I googled and searched on these forums and have seen this pop up before, but I didn’t find a good resolution other than people just letting their orders expire:

I’ve had Avast for maybe 2 years now. I just bought Avast Internet Security via Paypal (through the renewal popup on my machine) and got an email from verify@nexway.com asking for me to scan and email them both sides of a government ID in order for them to process my order.

This seems not to be an email scam, and Nexway is an Avast reseller. I’d like to remain an Avast customer, but there is no way that I am sending scans of government documents to an unknown third-party. It seems like customers who will easily send that information to strangers are going to need a lot more than a good antivirus program.

Or is this reasonable in some way that I have not yet considered? And is this an Avast thing, or just a Nexway thing? I’ve already started looking for other antivirus products, but I’d rather not switch from something that I’ve been happy with for 2 years now.

It sounds like a nexway thing, although I recently renewed my licence via paypal and did not have that problem. But mine was via digital river

Before sending any identification to Nexway I’d ask avast first.
You can use this form.

I think this is resolved. On the phone with Nexway they said that I was flagged because I ordered Avast with a billing address in Canada and an IP address in Mexico. I’m a Canadian and am visiting family in Mexico. To the credit of Nexway, on the phone they just asked what was going on and for my order # and billing address, and it was all cleared up. That said, it two emails they made it sound very clear that scans of ID were necessary. I think this is completely unreasonable, especially since people posing as trusted companies and asking for stuff is extremely common.

For anyone who has this problem:

I replied to the email saying that there was no way that I’d send my IDs. I got a reply that said “sales wants this, sorry.” In that email there was a contact phone number. I called, there was no wait on hold, and very efficient. 5 minutes later I have my product license in my inbox.

It was actually so efficient that I’m still not 100% sure that I haven’t been scammed- it was not an 800 number, the guy just said “hello” when I called, no introduction, no cheesy hold music. I don’t think I gave them any more information than what they already had, though. We’ll see what happens. I also emailed Avast about this, but no reply so far.

I believe someone else mentioned this in the forum a few months ago.

I can understand Nexway’s position with all of the credit card fraud going on.
You did right by not giving out any personal information. Security goes both ways.
If you used the form I gave a link to, you should have a ticket number which can be
used to follow-up with.

I hope all ends well for you.
