Passwords

I’ve changed the password on each workstation so user may be able to send emails without being blocked or receiving errors by temporarily disabling the mail shield. However, the password keeps reverting back to only allow my own admin password, no longer allowing user to disable at their own discretion. Please advise how to best rectify this so I not longer need to constantly log into each station to set passwords over and over again. Thank you.

Jason:

There isn’t a way to do so as far as I am aware.

The Avast Enterprise Console (or SOA console) only provides for a single password (set in "Policies: avast! Antivirus/Password) to protect the following areas of the Avast program installation:

  • General program access (opening the Avast GUI at all)
  • Program settings (the “Settings” GUI screen)
  • Protection control (turning on and off any of the “shields”; there’s no way to specify which shields are password-protected)
  • Protection settings (changing settings on any of the “shields”)
  • Scan control (stopping or pausing active “scans”)
  • Scan settings (changing settings on active “scans”)
  • Update control (accessing the “Maintenance/Updates” GUI screen)
  • Virus chest control

If your users are only having trouble with sending emails, you might consider disabling the “Scan outbound mail (SMTP)” function in “Mail Shield/Main” for all users as an alternative to allowing your users to enable/disable the Mail Shield (and other shields) completely.

Otherwise, your only option is to change the protection password at the console and either reboot, restart the “avast! Enterprise Client Service” (or its SOA counterpart) or “push” the settings down to all machines.
