i’m worried i may have a bug, my avast is always up to date. i have a d-link dsl-302g . i have a new compaq presario running windows xp sp2.(before anyone asks i suffered the same probs with my old pc). after a couple of hours of being connected, my connection drops out and i get the ballon in the system tray saying i have limited or no connectivity etc, but i still have the usual 4 lights on modem. if i unplug the modem for a while then plug back in, the computer doesnt recognise that i have done this, and when modem restarts, i have three lights, only the usb light is not on now( i connect via usb, and i have also tried connecting via ethernet but it doesnt matter which one i use the same prob happens). if i dont unplug the modem and instead go to device manager and disable modem, nothing happens. if i just reboot pc and leave modem on and connected, it still will not connect and most times says the usb device is not recognized. so what i generally do is reboot pc and unplug modem power. but…when my pc says system is shutting down, it doesnt, it just hangs on that last screen. so i have to press and hold the tower pc button to shutdown (if connection to adsl is working when i shut down, it will shut down properly) when i reboot pc and modem, i have no problems for a few hours at least. i have checked cables, tried 2 different antivirus and nat disabled or enabled makes no difference. could it be a bug in my system or a crappy modem? sorry this was so long
wow - lots of issues here
Do you have 1 or 2 pcs connected to the D-Link? If there are 2, does the first pc get disconnected when you connect to the internet with the second?
Farmer Bill :
You did NOT mention if you have any antiSPYWARE
programs on your machine !? And if "yes", what have the
scan result(s) shown, if anything ?
If you do NOT have any antiSPYWARE programs on your
machine, I would encourage you to install the following
GOOD & FREE ones :
1. Ad-Aware SE Personal from :
www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
2. Ewido from :
www.ewido.net/en
After you install them, you have to "update"; then run
each program's "Full Scan" and let us know what they
find, if anything.
thanx guys
mauserme, i sometimes run 2 pc’s and don’t have any probs doing this as long as i have nat enabled.
spiritsongs, i do noy have antispyware. i will get adaware and let you know what happens.
cheers
Try Spybot Search & Destroy as well:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
And don’t overlook Ewido as suggested by Spiritsongs. Its excellent.
i installed ad-aware and ran scans which found 55 critical objects. all were cookies with a risk rating of 3. i will also try the other spyware programs. too early to tell if i’m moving in the right direction, busy with work etc. will try again 2moro. thanx

farmerbill, have you tried a firmware upgrade to your modem? 2 different ones listed here.
http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=67&sec=0#drivers
i have downloaded the firmware upgrade, but cannot install it. because i am with optus.
this is what it says on the d-link faq page re firmware upgrade of my dsl-302g-
Loading generic firmware into Optus-supplied DSL-302G
You can load generic firmware into Optus-supplied DSL-302G modem only if you are no longer Optusnet customer.
Please send an e-mail stating that you are not Optusnet customer to support@dlink.com.au.
After installing this firmware you will now only receive technical support for the DSL-302G modem from D-Link Australia.
The upgrade software will not work on MacOS and will not work via USB connection.
The upgrade can be carried out by D-Link Warranty Department (charges apply).[/color]
so i dont know what to do about this.
also i installed ewido and it found 148 objects which i deleted. i also installed spybot but nothing was found with it.
What kinds of objects were deleted?
Have you been online long enough to know if the problem still exists?
farmerbill first and formost I would test to see if I had removed all malware
I suggest that you download the excellent Merijn.org program Hijack-this
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip
Run the program HJT and paste a copy of the text file to http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english this will
give you a good indication about the state of your system hope this helps
