PC crashed in middle of Avast free 1203 installation

Greetings to all,
I’m new to the forum and a have a thorny problem. A client of ours has Avast on his XP machine and it crashed in the middle of installing the update to the program, he now cannot uninstall it, the gui is missing, and the admin user in safe mode has lost its administrator rights!

It’s a doozy! ???

Has anyone come across this problem? Is there a fix? or is it XP reinstall time?
Will the Avast uninstall doobry uninstall the program? Do I need the mythical 1203 patch? and will it ease my chocolate cravings? 8)

Thanks Asyn,
I will tell him about the uninstall utility, will uninstalling it fix the admin rights issue with his admin user?
