Hi,
This is my first time here, and I am desperate for some help.
My pc keeps switching itself off. Even when I read mails, all of a sudden, off it goes.
When I tried doing the initial scan, pc went off.
I try and do a full scan, and off it goes. The scanner is running (I hope), as my little blue ball is spinning, so the only hope I have is that if its a virus, this will pick anything up.
Sometimes I can successfully do a spyware scan (search and destroy), but other times, pc will switch off.
The only suggestion I have had was to clean the fan. Done this, even though I didn’t think it was over heating, as it can switch off as soon as I put it on the morning.
Also, dont know if this is relevant, as it might be normal, but I looked at all the stuff on pc, as I searched the whole thing. Some of the programs are written in blue, not black.
Have you tried to enable a boot scan, this way if it is a virus it won’t be able to switch off the PC during the boot scan, but if it still switches off in the boot scan it is mostly likely a hardware problem.
What kind of error ?
It could be that the “box with an error” as you describe it is that welcome box that pops up when running safe mode.
When you boot into safe mode a box comes up asking you if you are sure you want to work in safe mode. So you must click YES obviously , if you click no it will log out.
When I try safe mode, the error box appeared, but the whole thing switched off before I could read it. This appeared after I started safe mode, and whilst the windows loading page appeared.
Eventually after several attempts, I managed to finally start in safe mode. I was able to do this, after managing to get going by loading up from last good load (or whatever called). Tried scanning, but pc switched itself off. Arrgh.
Boot scan, I think is the one that I would have done when I installed Avast, after re-starting to instal. If so, again pc switched itself off. If this isn’t a boot scan, could someone please explain how?
Also, how would I check the memory modules, power supply and motherboard, as suggested by SasH.
Sorry for all the q’s, but I literally know nothing about pc’s.
Can you try on-line scanning in Safe Mode or schedule an avast boot time scanning from Safe Mode?
Click on the Menu button.
Choose Schedule Boot Time Scan.
Doing so displays a dialog allowing you to schedule virus scanning.
Check Archives, if you want scan all the archives.
Specify whether all the disks or just a specific folder should be scanned.
Select Advanced options for scheduling details.
Select how to automatically process infected files.
Choose how to automatically process infected system files.
Click the Schedule button to confirm the settings.
hi the most common reason ur PC turns off is due to the overheating of processor…if u have have a temperatur indicator on ur cabinate check to see if the temp is less that 45"C…
…
bring up the task manager[control+alt+del] and see the processor usage…has ur Pc become slow??
…
there is another possiblity that …the cooling fan on ur motherboard is not working…
check that…
…
open ur cabinate[switch off the power at least a god 20-30 min before else the capacitors can jolt u nasty ;D…expirence]
and doubl check on the hardware…and see if all the connections are tight…
press in the RAM tight…[DON’T remove/connect some loose wire they are a lot on connections which are not connected]
…reboot
this will solve ur problem in 95% of the cases if ur hardware is not fused …
if this does not help post ur hi jack log …we’ll check if the instability is caused by contradicting software u might have installed recently/malware
