PC Tools Firewall 7 Plus !!!

Hi Guys ,

I'm thinking of trying out PC Tools Firewall 7 Plus and was wondering if during installation i need to add Avast 6 (free) to the exclusions list in the firewall and vice versa ?

Also anyone using PC Tools Firewall 7 Plus and can tell me how to configure to run alongside Avast 6 Free with no conflicts ?

                                                        Thanks
                                                            JOEY

First thing I wud suggest u is update ur avast version to 6.0.1044 (See the pinned thread above)

I think u have changed ur signature now. It was showing version 5.0.677 to me

Hi Ashish ,

Sorry i've been using Avast 6 free for a while now . Haven't been to the forum in a while and forgot to update my info !!!

What wrong with Online Armor? Version 5.0 was just released.

Ok so as I have not used PC tool Firewall so I cant help you with that.
But after PC tools have been taken over by Symantec its developing is not so good…As reported by forum users here…
My suggestion is to use COMODO FW or Outpost Pro firewall or Outpost free…

Regards
ash

You are misinformed. Symantec bought PC Tools years ago but PC Tools is still there own company. Nothing wrong with Symantec. I used NIS for years.

PC Tools firewall is also no longer supported. Last build was in 2010.

Hi Dieselman ,

Nothing really just takes longer for my computer to boot up w Online Armor (free) & Avast 6 (free) and i am just looking at lighter alternatives to OA . I ran Soluto and the top (2) programs with the longest boot times were Avast & OA and i'm not removing AVAST !!!

OK for that purpose I suggest Outpost 7.5 firewall which is they tagged as performance edition and is in beta form but quite stable…very very very light for me

Well according to your sig your using the out dated version of OA. Also did you exclude all of Avast processes from OA and exclude OA from Avast? Windows firewall is also very good if your behind a router with NAT.

Top Free 3rd Party Firewalls:

Comodo
Online Armor
OutPost
PC Tools
Private Firewall

I think you and OutPost need to get a room. ;D

;D

Hi Dieselman ,

Just went to OA's website and see that they indeed have a new version available ! I take it that you install it the same as the previous one and add Avast to OA exclusions and vice versa , correct?

Of course they have a new version…5.0. Emsisoft bought out OA about a year ago. Its best to uninstall your previous version of OA and start off fresh. I tried OA 5.0 just so I know about it but quickly uninstalled it. Man I despise HIPS. Allow this…Block that. No thanks. I am fine with Windows 7 firewall set to advanced security and my NAT.

OK , thanks for the help !!!

I use OA Premium with HIPS and prefer the added protection. As long as you add the exclusions to Avast and vs, you’re OK without the pop-ups. I’ve been using OA, but testing other firewalls for years…and sad to say that I was easily hacked into using PCTools FW. So I’m staying with OA, which is user-friendly for both novice and advanced users. Even the beta version is stable and the software is very configurable.

A router w/NAT keeps hackers out. OA can also be very heavy. It runs about 5 processes adding up to at least 50MB of ram. Do you use Run Safer? I installed OA 5.0 and after 5 minutes I had about 10 pop ups. No thanks. And that was even after running through the security wizard with the “Trust everything” option.

@ Dieselman,

I don’t know what your set up is based on your Signature. I also use a NAT router and use Run Safer on a limited basis, but have no problems. Keep in mind that everyone’s system and set up is different, so what may work for you may work differently for me or someone else. I do have a problem with some people trying to hack from other parts of the world, but they don’t get far with me. ;D ;D ;D

My setup…Very light but effective.

OS: Windows 7 HP 64 bit
Real Time Protection: Avast Free 6.0.1044 (Highest Settings)
Software Firewall: Windows 7 w/Advanced Security
Hardware Firewall: 2Wire Gateway w/NAT
DNS: ClearCloud
Hardening: Emet 2.0 (Maximum) w/internet facing programs selected
Backup: Paragon & Windows 7
Browser: FF 4.0 w/ABP,BP,LastPass and Browser Protect
On Demand Scanners: MBAM,HMP,SAS
Start Up Monitoring: Autoruns
Process Monitoring: Process Hacker
Disk Cleaner: CCleaner
Updater: Secunia PSI
Zero Day Malware Protection: My Brain

Wouldn’t it be easier to just add your set up to your Signature? That way when you help others they know what you have and can refer to it.
