Permanently remove disabled shields

Running Avast 5.0.462 and have IM and P2P shields disabled and unchecked in status. However in the summary screen it still shows Real Time Shields with the status of “off”. Running Vista Home Basic with SP2. Without doing an uninstall/reinstall how can I remove these two shields permanently? Thanks.

Win Control Panle, software, select avast and use the add/delete option.

To continue where Zyndstoff left off.

Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to select Change, click next. The Configuration window allows you you to uncheck Shields You don’t need, take care not to disable essential shields, click next and OK your way out, see image.

Great, thank you very much. I thought it was an easy fix, just wasn’t sure where to do it. Have a great weekend!!!

Hello,
I just tried it because I also wanted to remove those two Shields as I don’t need them but after a reboot of my PC the Shields are still there! I tried to remove them a second time but then it says that
the Program as already been updated… another reboot did not help either.

I have Avast Internet Security (paid version) Any idea why it does not work?
Thanks for help

You’re welcome.

I have no idea why it didn’t work for you as there isn’t much information to work with.

When I opened the Change, Configurations window, I was on-line and the configurations were loaded, I don’t believe it is essential to be on-line to make the changes.

When you tried this were you using an account with administrator privileges, as I don’t know if a limited user could make these changes to the installation ?

You say they are still there after a reboot, where are you looking, in the avast UI, or in the Change Configuration window ?

there’s a bug in the installer, I mentioned it already and there was no comment and no feedback ::slight_smile:

it sometimes happens when you launch the “uninstall/change” process that if you leave the panel too long on the screen, it just vanishes

it also happens that sometimes when you want to remove a component the procedure fails, or it looks like it succeeded, you reboot, and the unwanted components are still there, I’ve seen it happen.

it also happens that it just works as expected, so the issue is random.

I mentioned all that in 5.0.418, and obviously they didn’t bother to fix it… I won’t blame them, that wasn’t a priority, and I agree it is not a priority. They’ll fix that soon or later.

ps: I confirm you must be online to do that, and I think you need to be online to make sure you download updated components - when adding (at least the vps is checked, not sure about the components themselves, if they’re installed from disk, an msi somewhere, or from avast online)

If that is the case, perhaps trying again might get the result, if the window isn’t on the screen too long.

I haven’t seen it happen, but then again I only did it once, when I did it for the IM and P2P shields after installation of 5.0.418 over 4.8.

sure, if you’re fast, it generally works, I removed something successfully earlier today.

To answer your questions, yes I was doing the changes while I was a administrator. And after a reboot they were still there in the UI as well as in the Change/Configuration Window. Now I just see Logos’s post mentionning there is a bug in the Installer, so maybe it is true?

Hi Logos, you’re right. You have to be “super fast” and it works.
Thanks

cool

I just did it real fast and it work for me also. Thanks!!!
