Persistant viruses and a question

So yes.

I came here a few weeks ago asking for help with a virus issue.

Pretty much, after a system recovery from a bad virus infection, I was still having virus issues. I found out the viruses had been in the backup HD and sorta came with my out of the box condition files. -.-

I started with AVG and MBAM, and after weeks of issues, and a multitude of viruses, was directed to Avast (This was around when I found out they had been in the backup HD)

A few tips were given, but, while for a week straight both MBAM and Avast (AVG was removed) no viruses were found, I began to relax. I was still suspicious however due to the fact that, occasionally, for no apparent reason, I get the Windows XP Critical Error sound. No message. No nothing but the sound. Another common issue had been the drivers for my tablet encountering an error the moment I log. Though this had been during the main outbreak. It calmed down when the viruses had.

The other night, after my mothers computer freaked out, my apprehension returned. When I got home, I ran a boot time scan. Later I, through a forced safe mode start up through MSConfig (My computer lacks the F8 option when starting. I don’t know why. Only escape, F1 and F10 are options.) ran MBAM. MBAM found a Trojan downloader. The magical one that keeps coming back. (Yeah I realize probably not the same exact one but that’s what it’s felt like)

I tried to run Avast in safe mode, but for some reason, it wouldn’t start. The little help-type menu came up, but the “splash screen” never showed.

I went ahead and restarted the computer and started Avast. It found nothing.

But since then, things have been going weird again. My tablet’s drivers are flipping out again, causing me to have to restart my computer 30% of the time during start up. And though I admit this may be completely unrelated and but a coincidence, my keyboard is freaking in that the space bar only works 80% or so of the time.

I don’t know. It just seems like there should be something I can do. I don’t know where I could have gotten that Trojan, as I mostly only visit specific sites. I admit it could have been, but if it’s the same thing from before I’m going to cry.

Anyway. Besides any tips for that, (I have Avast, ZoneAlarm and MBAM as my main back bone of protection) I have one question.

Not sure about screen shot rules or anything, so here’s a link. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b365/Nigai/Normal.jpg?t=1231896380 Pretty much, my question is, of the programs made to start up the moment my computer turns on, should there be one with no name, location or anything? It seems suspicious, but I don’t want to prevent it from starting. Last time I took it upon myself to decide what was and wasn’t necessary with no real knowledge of computers, I deleted my modem. cough

I don’t know. I’m just losing my hope again. ><

No worries. It seems most of this is the win32.virut.B First I just got done dealing with this issue.

When ever I would log on it would say like Rundll32.dll was missing and stuff like that.

What you need to do is disable system restore.

steps

  1. Click start menu.

  2. Highlite my computer

  3. Right Click my computer and go to properties.

5., go to system restore and click disable.

Next after you download avg (or if you already have it) Run it in safe mode.

Then when its done.

Download spyware cease and malwarebytes

Some people have cd keys for em so quick research will get you those keys.

I got rid of this virus yesterday and I ran 3 scans last night and it’s found nothing.

So try those steps.

Why shouldn’t you do it with avast instead of AVG?

??? ???

1: System Restore has been disabled for about a month now since the virus was in a few restore files and it was recommended to turn it off and then run my antivirus by someone on this forum.

2: AVG, I’m sorry to say, sucks. It has been present during the last 3 recovery’s of my files to no avail. I’ll stick with Avast, which while it hasn’t completely repaired my problem, is doing much better than AVG ever pretended to do. And I know about the keys, a friend tried to let me use his and it didn’t work,

In fact, I’m getting mad at AVG. Even though I uninstalled it, I keep finding folders, which I worry is why Avast isn’t performing to it’s fullest. But the AVG remover programs I’ve been pointed to have failed to fully remove it for me.

As for theWin32 mentioning, this is where most of the viruses come from. I’m almost wondering if I should just cut my losses while they equal only 2 months instead of a year this time around, and do another system recovery. I’m sorta-halfway-not-really sure the backup HD is clean now, unlike it was during the last recovery. I’m just avoiding this because of all the programs to be reinstalled.

Ugh I don’t know. I just know AVG is NOT the cure. AVG has been a leech upon my computers running capacity long enough, and Avast has done much better at it’s job. MBAM did better than both combined. I’d by a key for it for active protection if I had the cash.

Not at all. I’ve actually compared the two. Avast didn’t find anything on win32.virut

I ran avg in safe mode and it found it and removed then I boot back my computer and I go to google and it’s gone and is no longer showing up. Check ur rundll32.exe file in your windows and see when it was last modified.

And I’ve compared the two. AVG never finds anything while Avast does. It doesn’t really matter. None of them are finding the main problem and that itself is the problem. However, I wont be reinstalling AVG. Because AVG and Avast can’t be running on the same computer, and because Avast has done generally better, I’ll just stick with what sorta works.

To ensure you get rid of all the remnants of AVG.

AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

You have started several threads, without posting any logs.In one you said you had Mcafee and Avast at the same time. ( or was that your mums pc )Then AVG and Avast together. Why not start from scratch. Run Avast, MalwareBytes AntiMalware, SuperAntispyware, online scanner Kaspersky, and a hijackthis log. Then post ALL the logs. Also do not use msconfig to boot into safe mode An infected computer is not stable, and by using the /SAFEBOOT option in MSCONFIG you are altering your Boot.ini file to make it boot ONLY in Safe Mode. If your computer fails to boot into Safe Mode, as it may well do, then you will be left in a position where you cannot boot at all.

Just my personal feeling… I think that one computer that can’t boot in Safe Mode won’t be able to boot at all… at least, most of the computers…

Hi Guys,
XP CRITICAL ERROR SOUND BUT NO MESSAGE
I recently reinstalled XP Pro and soon after managed to get a couple of Trojans. AVG, Windows Defender and Lavasoft Ad Aware have since removed them, but I am interested to know about the critical error sound I now get. I have identified that it occurs exactly on the hour after first switch on. After that it does not appear again. I have been using XP for many years and never had this before. I can only assume it’s to do with the virus.
Any ideas how to stop this annoying error (without turning off the speakers!)?
Many thanks
???

hamgray, it would be good to open a new thread specifically to your problem.
Anyway, if there is no info in the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’, could be a hardware problem with the speakers, couldn’t it? Can you change the speakers for other ones?
