persistent tracking cookie

My dear forum members,

I have a question. Sometimes through Ad-aware, sometimes through a-squared I find up malware file C:\WINDOWS\Cookies\anyuser@please[1].txt
Next thing I delete it, I know it is a tracking cookie. Normally I use FF, the only time I get it when I listen to streaming radio. It is abradio that places this persistent cookie. It is a czech station for various streaming radio, actually a fabulous site for me because through them I can listen to all my favorite Polish radio stations like RMF FM, Radio Zet etc. etc. Why they need that persistent cookie, to analyze what music I listen to? Can somebody give me some more info?

greets (pozdrawiam)

Unless there is some form of customisation (your personal settings) on the the radio station, then there really is no need for a persistent cookie.

However, what AdAware classes as persistent is anyone’s guess, e.g. not a session cookie valid for only that day. I would say that adaware is a bit too fussy about cookies, they aren’t that big a problem. Also if you are happy with the service and the station is legit, you probably have little to be concerned about. They may well just be gathering info for play list/popularity, what people come back to, etc.

You could either add it to the exceptions (ignore) in adaware if you believe it isn’t a concern, or permanently block it using your browser, firewall, cookie blocker, etc. and see if it has any effect the next time you visit the site.

Hi DavidR,

Thanx for the info. With the cookie blocked, the music is fine, only the ads in the player are gone. Good riddence. There it says page can not be shown. I just wanted you to know what it did. Just for your information. It is an ad serving cookie.

All the best from me here,

My Dear Friend, I don’t know exactly what happens and why this radio-station needs track cookies. I say one thing: I got spywares only when I used to listen the online radios by winamp. Many persons said “How is possible?” … don’t know… After the uninstall of thi type of streaming programs I had no problems at all. ;D

Most common tracking cookies these days do nothing but generate advertisements. I don’t see why you need them for listening to music. Maybe I’m wrong. :-\

:o Weird, indeed. Not only tracking but also showing ads? Wasn’t it the “common knowledge” that cookies are just text files and should be safe different from caches? I listen to the net radio through foobar2000 but I have never experienced this sort of phenomena.

I use WinAmp… jetAidio and BSplayer and have never had adds when I listen to streaming Radio.
