Does anyone know how much physical paged memory Avast uses please as I’ve been told that my Steam games maybe crashing from high memory use and I have to rule out each possibility, thank you
ps have any of you guys had Steam games crash on you and did you find a way around the problem?
I think you are being fed a line of BS (or confused thinking) paged memory is usually virtual as in the swapfile/pagefile where when you are running low on ‘Physical’ memory (RAM) items in memory is swapped out into the pagefile.
Limiting what is running will reduce your RAM usage and the need to page anything out. As has been mentioned many times before avast isn’t a resource hog.
None taken, it just seemed a strange question as it mixes two different terms. It may well be an issue with some of the major antivirus apps that are resource hogs, where the system is slowed in general use (more so if gaming), but avast isn’t in that category.
If you are experiencing problems, you should check what is running in the background and close all non-essential software, but your firewall and anti-virus shouldn’t be included in any software cull.
If they crash are there no entries in the windows event viewer that might pinpoint the issue.
You don’t mention what RAM and CPU that you have, the two most important elements in any possible resource issue. Nor do you mention your Graphics card, again an important element. You don’t say what the crash entails, e.g. does it just crash the game or does it crash (BSOD) the system or does it crash to a black screen (usually hardware.heat issue).
Well my computer has run the game since I bought it so it shouldn’t be an issue, when it does have problems is about 5 minutes in and then it freezes but with looping sounds I attempted to upgrade my drivers but it still happens
Freezing where the mouse is also locked is often Graphics Card (GC) related or heat.
Heat is probably one of the easiest to check and possibly address, there are programs that will report on Sensor Temperatures and may be able to report on your GC chip temperature.
You can check on the state of the GC fan, is it clogged with dust and dirt, give it a clean, blow the dust an debris out. Try to ensure that there is a good airway around the GC so heat can be channelled away.
What ever you do don’t use a vacuum cleaner as it can cause a build up of static electricity you can buy compressed air cans to blow the debris out of fans, etc. for the Graphics you would need to take the card out to get at it easily. But before going to that length first check the temperatures.
RPM is something you will have to google for your fan make and model. The smaller the fan the faster the RPM is a rough rule of thumb as it is working fats to move the volume of air to cool the device. Some fans come with a variable fan speed that can be either auto or manually set. But you will have to check for the fans specifications.
