Hello. I use avast! version 4.7 Home Edition. Thanks for a good product! Problem is, my IDS, snort, tells me that over 50% of my traffic is coming from avast! pinging these ips:
I like this product and I’d like to continue using, but how can I stop avast from pinging these ips? I’m assuming its pinging to check for connectivity to download updates.
avast just ping their websites to see if you’re on line and to donwload updates. I did not check one by one these IP, but the list of IP pinged are on the server.def file (into setup folder under avast installation folder).
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds. If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band. If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time. Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.
If ‘all’ your traffic is avast pinging their servers… well, you’re not browsing that much, are you?
Thanks for replying Tech. I found the avast4.ini. I could NOT find where to change the settings. I want to change the settings to NOT ping so often. Where can I change the settings?
I did NOT find server.def.
No, I don’t browse much. Only to visit these forums!
Right click the a blue icon on system tray and choose Program settings.
Updates (Basic) > Details (change the update interval in minutes).
On the Updates (Connections) tab of settings, check the ‘permanent connected’ to Internet.
So it won’t ping to see if you have a dial-up connection alive.
C:\Program files\Alwil Softwarel\Avast4\Setup\servers.def
Open it in Notepad to see it
