Please Help: AVAST blocking differently when I am using mobile broadband dongle

Hi All,

Newbie here but not computer illiterate. Really just looking for an explanation.

I run Windows Vista (always updated) and AVAST (which I have for years and still think is great). I use Windows Firewall. At home I connect to an ASDL broadband modem/router from my phone line and when connected like in this way I never have any problems relating to Malware/Virus’/Blocking harmful sites etc.

However I have recently started working away from home in my van and I am using a 3(UK) mobile phone network broadband to get online. Ironically I get faster speed through this than I do the phone line at home :o. Anyway I have noticed that when connected using the 3 mobile phone network, AVAST is popping up numerous blocked sites warnings (either DCOM Exploits or LVASS). My machine NEVER does this when at home, so my questions are:

  • Is this because at home I have a router with a built in Firewall that blocks these?
  • If so, is using mobile network dongles more risky?
  • Should I/Can I be doing anything to stop these attacks?

My assumption is AVAST is successfully blocking unwanted visits but I am getting paranoid using the mobile dongle as I normally dont get any warnings. Should I install additional firewall software and if so what?

Thanks in advance. All thoughts welcomed.

Just to add, by far the most common exploit blocked is for this IP address:
94.24.238.31:135/tcp

Is this only when you use this type of connection or is there a possibility that you hay have picked up an infection about the same time? Please let us know.

Hi,

I guess this is what I am trying to establish. At the minute I only have the means to connect through the phone broadband dongle…BUT as I said this only started happening as soon as I used it. At the weekend I’ll be able to connect to a standard home landline connection so I’ll see if that changes anything. Or if I can get connected another way sooner I’ll try that and report any findings.

Obviously my concern is that I have actually got something ???

In that case I would start scanning with avast! or Malwarebytes, which can both be downloaded from cnet. But since you are experienceing redirects it may bee a good idea to use aswMBR, which you can get from http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm
