Please help! My Avast Pro is showing unsecured & I can't turn it back on?

Hi there,

I seem to be having similar problems to other users, one I found here:

I hate to say it, but after reading all the problems above, and with the problems I'm having, I am soooo regretting having removed version 4.8 and updating to 5.

On the current status page, it says my computer is unprotected and when I click the button that says ‘Fix Now’, nothing happens. Just below that it shows the following message:

‘The avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system.’

To the right of that message is a small yellow bullet icon with ‘Start program’ button. I click that, nothing happens. I closed the processes in the process library to shut Avast down, then restarted it, and it still shows the same messages. I uninstalled the program, restarted my computer, re-downloaded the program from the site. When I went to run the install it said the program detected an issue that requires me to reboot my computer before I could run the installation, and if I continue to run the installation it could result in problems. So I canceled out of the re-install, rebooted my computer, then ran the installation. At the end of the installation it wanted me to reboot again, so I did, and when I restarted, the program still showed the above messages. Nothing was fixed in the re-installation of the program.

Up until now I have never had a problem with Avast, and in fact, I absolutely love it. It was, in my opinion, the best antivirus program available, until now. If I can get my version 4.8 back again, I will continue to run the program, but seriously, something needs to be done with this new version, because it just isn’t working. I honestly do not wish to have to revert to AVG or some other anti-virus program, so please, please do something to fix this new version so that it actually works!

Seeing as I can’t seem to put in a signature on this site as I cannot find the option to do so, I’ll post this info here:

System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3. Manufactured and supported by: eMachines Inc. eMachines.Sysem AMD Athlon ™ Processor 2650e 1.61 GHz, 1.75 GB of RAM Physical Address Extension Avast! Free Version 5.0.545

My system is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 5.1, Service Pack 3.

Current version of Avast is 5.0.545

Please help, I’ve run other anti-virus software but haven’t picked anything up.

Do I try to delete Avast & then re-instal?

thanks

hi jo,

what where the suggestions given in the thread that you got that quote from? Did you try them?

you can give uninstall/install a shot.

Sat

I suggest an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install to fix your problems.

Please follow these instructions:

Save a copy of newest version of Avast.

Save the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility on your hard drive.

Disconnect from the Internet at this time.

Uninstall Avast through “Add / Remove Programs”.

Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.

Reboot twice.

Clean your computer up.

Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.

Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.

Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro or AIS.

Reset your settings, if needed.

Run a scan (try a Full System Scan initially to check for malware).

Please let us know if you have any further questions or problems after completing the above.

Jo,

When you say you have run other AV software, are they just on-demand scanners that you have run or are they running all the time? Two AV’s running at the same time can cause problems, but an on-demand scanner with a resident (Avast) is fine.

Sorry to interject…

SafeSurf, does rebooting twice do anything or is it just for good measure?

Hi Safesurf & thank you for your suggestions.

I have printed them off & will try this shortly.

The reason I used other AV is due to the response in the thread I posted above. In it, the poster was told to d/l Superantispyware & another one that I can’t remember offhand, I guess to see if any virus had rendered Avast inoperable.

Nothing came up in any of their scans & I have deinstalled both of them so that can’t be an issue with Avast.

I’ll give your suggestions a try & let you know how I get on.

Thanks again.

Jo

Can anyone tell me where I go to d/l another version of Avast Pro? I have already bought this product & everywhere I look I have to pay again, there is nowhere to put my details to show that I have purchased this product?

Jo

@Jo,

http://www.avast.com/download-software#tab2 is where you can download the required setup files. Click on the required version, viz, free, pro or internet security.

Enjoy!
nmb

Provided that you have saved the email you got sent after purchase and the license.avastlic file, then you have no problem in downloading the setup file nmb gave the link for or directly, avast 5.0.545 Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe.

If you haven’t saved the email and file, then you have a few more hoops to jump through (getting a copy of your original license), but you shouldn’t have to pay again.

Thank you to all that replied. My avast is now up & running again thanks to your suggestions. :-*

Jo

You’re welcome, glad that everything is up and running as you say ;D

@ jo24

If Avast is working fine now, you should be able to reinstall the on-demand software that you mention earlier if you haven’t done so already; I believe you were referencing to SAS and free MBAM (http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/).

Glad we could help you out. Let us know if you have any additional problems or concerns.
