Three days ago, a virus attack my laptop. Then I scanned my laptop many times with AVAST! (boot-time scan), but the virus could not be deleted, nor move to chest and repaired. The virus could only be detected by boot-time scanning, and could not be detected by quick scan and full system scan.
The information shown after the boot-time scanning is written below :
File C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application Data<AAAE891E-DC50-4DD4-A79D-C19DDB94E30E\OFFLINE\mfileBagIDE.dll\bag\FFToolbar.xpil\components\smileycore.dll is infected by Win32: PUP-gen [PUP]
When the virus attack my laptop, the appearance of my laptop interface is disappear. For example, when I used a software the commands became disappear. In addition, when I write a message to send by e-mail, the writings disappear.
PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program - See http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci1066761,00.html. Not included in this definition are tools which can be used for good or evil, some have been legitimately installed for a specifically good purpose, but could have been unknowing installed for a malicious purpose.
Not all antivirus programs scan for PUPs and avast has it turned off by default (an exception being the boot-time scan).
Do you actually know what this is, I’m assuming a firefox toolbar given the information in the location path.
It is possibly that this FFToobar could be classed as Potentially Unwanted if you didn’t specifically install it, so essentially only you can answer that. This is I believe why the PUP scan is off by default on the other scans as most users may be unable to make an informed decision on what action to take. The smilecore.dll, mFileBagIDE.dll files are associated with adware, so I wouldn’t have though that this is directly associated with the symptoms you describe.
What was the original malware that was detected by avast, file name, location malware name ?
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later. Download, Install, Update, Run and post the contents of the log.
