Please help with odd problem

PROBLEM: Avast latest update breaks Firefox 3.6.28 Toolbar Customization

Am currently running Avast Free 7.0.14.26 and have tried to update to the latest version. As soon as the new version is installed, the Customized Toolbar in FF 3.6.28 reverts to its default state, and all the customized items previously available under View ->Toolbars- >Customize are no longer available.

I have tried the following:

Changing different settings in Avast
Copying profile data back to the current drive
Copying the entire Mozilla folder back to the current drive

None of the above actions solved the problem. The only way I can get things back to normal is to restore a backup image of the hard drive made prior to updating Avast.

The only other option is to remove Avast from the system. With Avast removed, the Customized Toolbar returns the to they way I normally have it.

Other than suggesting to upgrade Firefox - which is not possible right now - is there anything I can try to resolve this issue, or am I just not going to be able to upgrade Avast?

I really like Avast, but if I cannot update it, I may have to switch to another product. :`(

Any suggestions you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any and all help.

  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??

Is that version of Firefox supported? Many software writers won’t support it at all, it is well out of date and Mozilla themselves clearly tell you to upgrade.

Firefox 3.6 is out of date

We recommend that you upgrade to the latest version, which is up to 7x faster and crashes less.

My configuration is similar to yours:

XP SP3 - avast! 7.0.1456 - CIS 5.10.228257.2253 [FW/D+] - FF 3.6.28 - Pocomail 3.4

Windows Defender is also running. MalwareBytes and Spybot are also on the machine, but are only run when needed.

According to the forums, there has been a new release, so I will try upgrading again and see if the problem persists.

Please do so.

Okay, the problem is solved, but the problem is not with Avast. The problem is with the Avast Webrep Plugin. As soon as it is disabled and Firefox is restarted, the Customized Toolbar is normal. If Webrep is re-enabled, the Toolbar breaks again. I can live without Webrep!

Thanks to all who helped solve this issue!

You’re welcome.
Still, as Adrian said, FF 3.6.x is outdated and doesn’t get any security updates anymore.
