I am having problems with comodo firewall and avast anti virus every time I try to download a programme or application, a box comes up with says you have downloaded a application with just the option to save the file (which normally is saved on my desktop) but when using I.E 7 you don’t have the option the to run the application as the same box comes up and I have to run it the long way but more to the point what is making that happen and how to stop it (sorry if that was not clear)
What version do you have of avast! and Comodo Firewall?
You did not have this problem with IE6?
I believe this is an IE7 security enhancement dropping the option to download and install a program in a single step. Personally I would ‘never’ install a file/program directly from the internet not even from a trusted source. The act of downloading should cause avast to scan the file and when you try to execute the file it would be scanned again.
Right, no I did not have this problem with I.E 6 I am using comodo version 2.4.17.183 and avast version 4.7.947 and this happens in firefox and I.E but in firefox it is expected (thats how they deal with downloads) but in I.E 6 (and 7 with avast web shield turned off) it gives the normail option of runing the programme or saving it) ok cut a long story very short I.E is dealing with downloads the same way as firefox ie with just the option to download it (defualt to desktop) which means to run a programme using I.E 7 I have to close the browser then run it off my desktop which was not the case before
Well the Web Shield enabled should have absolutely no control over the IE7 context menu list either the Run command is there or not, but it shouldn’t change because you have the web shield enabled.
The web shield only scans content, it doesn’t block (unless an infection is found in which case it alerts) and it can’t change context menus other than adding the avast Scan file entry in Explorer.
So I’m at a loss as to why this is happening, but I tested (IE6) a download link from avast and it doesn’t offer a Run context menu option, only Save As, this is with and without the web shield enabled. So this may well be a security update as I can recall being able to Run (download and install) previously in IE6.
Are you using the comodo firewall tho, you never said anyhow I have the old menu well I don’t know if it’s the old menu in I.E 7 to run as well as save when I disable the web shield but if I turn it on it goes back to the firefox way of offering you just save as the comodo forum knows about the problem check it out http://forums.comodo.com/index.php/topic,6224.0.html
no I was not talking about that save as menu hmmmm seen you don’t download stuff off the net maybe your not the right person to be helping I don’t mean that in a bad way but the icon comes when you download a application or a programme normally in I.E it gives you two options 1 to run it there and then or 2 to save it to your desktop ie save as and it firefox it gives you just one save to desktop but now I.E is doing what firefox does ie one option save to desktop but with web shield disabled it goes back to two options in I.E but with web shield on only 1 option
My firewall is in my signature Outpost Pro and your firewall should no impact at all on the windows context menu for ‘other’ programs.
I use firefox as my default browser and only use IE if it is a site requirement. I also never double click on an exe file as I don’t want it to run an unknown program, I don’t feel this is a safe practice. However, I have done just that on the avast downloads and double clicked the setupeng.exe file and I get the Option to Run or Save, with the Web Shield Enabled and IE6.
