Did you uninstall AVG before trying to use avast?
Which is your firewall?
avast does not change or mess any favorite sites list and does not block the access to them, unless they’re infected.
To uninstall avast:
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
- Boot.
- Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
- Boot.
I tried to remove the file by going to control panel. I get this error message:
a setface error 2 has occured. Will not let me uninstall. When I try and remove going to all programs, error message avast uninstall program running
go to avast help.
To temporarily disable the avast self defense module:
- Right click the ‘a’ blue icon on system tray.
- Programs settings > Troubleshooting (tab)
- Disable self defense module
Then proceed the uninstallation as posted before.
This error is frequently an indication that the installation didn’t complete successfully and this is often caused by having another AV installed (or remnants of it) when you install avast.
So did you have your favourite AVG still installed ?
There have been many ex AVG users convert to avast since avg 8.0 who didn’t experience these problems and are now happy avast users.
you may have to remove BOTH avast and AVG and use BOTH of their UNINSTALLERS
AVG has a new (July) uninstaller which you HAVE TO RUN
in addition did your computer come with Norton or McAfee or anything esle
They gotta go too
then you can install a new AV
I’d DL the new AV FIRST and have the installer in a file so you do not have to be online with no AV
Well guys I don’t have any blue icon in my tray! I can’t access trouble shooting tab! I have completely removed all virus protection programs from my machine. When I try to remove avast from control panel I get error message setface error 2! When I try and remove from all programs I get avast uninstaller is blocking task. When I boot up my computer avast does I repeat
does lock up my computer. I have to go to the all program screen and then
I get warning your avast will expire in one days. I have to go through all that
mess then computer will boot but extremely s l o w . A good friens of mine who works for computer elite here locally says I’ve downloaded corupt files
from avast. Please help
Let’s see if we can solve the missing “a” icon. If we can get it back then you should be able to access the program setting.
In windows explorer, navigate to this folder
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
In the right hand panel, locate and double click this file Ashdisp.exe
That should show the “a” icon in the tray. Then follow the steps given earlier to disable self protection. Post back no matter what the results and we’'ll keep pluging away.
Thanks for the info oldman, but when I tried your suggestion I got file not found. Thanks anyway…this is going to remove all my hair…no wait
a minute I’ve shaved my head…insanity…yes thats it…
Okay, next. I didn’t see where you used the avast uninstall tool as suggested by Tech.
Download the tool from
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
I suggest you save it to your desktop, easy to find there. I’m going to use the default loacation for the program. If you installed avast to a different location, you will have to adjust accordingly.
[*]Double click the file you down loaded
[*]In the top box, ensure avast home/pro is showing
[*]in the second box, copy and paste this line
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software
[*]Click Uninstall
Give it some time to work. It should ask for a reboot.
And run teh AVG uninstall tool also
gotta start fresh
keep plugging we’ll get this
I just wanted to thank oldman & tech for the very kind information. I used this
info and was successful in removing the avast files from my computer. To the unkind gentleman who thought, he was made the grand poopa of the forum I have this to say. Like a very wiseman said “you can’t have all the answers
because you haven’t been here long enough to hear all the questions!”
Hey H2oMaN, glad you got it.
Believe me the problem you had installing avast isn’t the norm, unless of course parts of another AV are left behind. That can be a problem with most AVs.
Anyway it’s good to see you’re going again and you are more than welcome. 8)
Despite being an “unkind gentleman” I am very glad too that you returned to this thread, followed the good advice in it and that it worked for you.
What matters most of all is that your problem was resolved - thanks to the good help of oldman and Tech.
Alanrf, you’re very useful helping here. You know that…
