We’re all well aware that there’s been some serious problems with the final release of ver. 7, particularly the recurring “finish installing” popup, behavior of the auto-sandbox, and the “account” setup, just to mention the ones that pop into mind first. And a number of quite good and relatively simple solutions and/or work-arounds have been presented for nearly all of these. Hopefully Avast will offer a new sub-version update before long to fix as many as possible.
Unfortunately, no one seems to be doing a search for existing topics on these problems before starting a new topic. As a result, there’s now umpteen active threads for each problem, and/or for some combination of them, with the result that when I first come in the last couple of days, there’s three or more pages of topics with new postings I haven’t yet seen. And that’s just in this one forum.
Please, please, please – do a search first before posting, and you’ll undoubtedly find an answer. It’s next to impossible to offer assistance if we have to hunt through several pages of postings to find every occurrence of a given question or problem.
With all due respect, they’ve been answered many times in many places, and it’s just a matter of checking through the appropriate topics (obvious enough from their titles).
I’ll give you a little help, though, in fairness … the “finish updating” popup thing can be eliminated once and for all with one little edit in avast5.ini (find “ShowSetupOutro”, and change the value from 1 to 0), and (so far, at least) the auto-sandbox database is so skimpy that it terminates nearly everything, so I simply disabled it. And the “account” is totally unnecessary unless you’re trying to coordinate updates on a LAN or similar.
As for the cause of the problems, one other poster has suggested that the question of updating vs. clean-installing seems to be moot since many users are encountering the same problems regardless of which method they used.
Maybe the topics with the most responses could be sticked or something like: Solutions for Recurring Avast 7 splash screen on boot-up here. How to do a removal of Avast 7 with the uninstall utility here. How to check for other software security conflicts with Avast 7 here. There are so many duplicate threads that say the same things, it is too hard to go through all of them to find information. Especially for those who need it in a hurry.
Well, after reading through SEVERAL of these many topics, I have decided NOT to update my husband’s laptop just yet! He tried to update (upon my insistence), and the installer hung about 1/3 of the way through. I had him reboot and try again, and it hung at “initializing.”
I updated my desktop without a problem, and all is well.
The only thing I DON’T like, on mine, is that I registered my account, and I KNOW what I set as my password, but it won’t take when I go to my account. Then I tried to GET my password, and it reset my password. OK…fine…I went to the link (three times), and get told that that page doesn’t exist on the Avast! website! Grrr. So I tried again to get the password, and THAT time, it set up my account all over again, and I have NO password, because I was never given one! So while I was logged in (from the new account setup e-mail I got), I tried to reset my password to what I want, and I can’t, because I do not know my current password! This really bites!
The avast account is not neccesary for your security, it’s main use is for keeping a eye on all your avast installs on different systems and android devices.
Most of the avast issues are happening from upgrades via the UI, best to do a clean install at this stage or just wait for another program refresh.
Yes, I have the similar issues as above. Vlk mentioned that a program will be out and we need to download it to fix it. Is that correct? Or will it automatically appear in the UI and we then click to update it. I am having a problem with engine and virus definitions as it kept initializing. Thanks.
Agreed. I downloaded the full program AND the uninstaller (have had to use that in the past, and it did work). However, unless it seems to take a LONG time before they fix the upgrade, I’ll wait.
