Ok I have a problem with either my comp or Avast but I dont know what to do…
For some reason now whenever I run a virus scan whenever it reaches to 24% it says virtual memory is low and then it seems like Avast gets stuck at 24% as a result from this any tips?
We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
How exactly does it freeze? Does it happen always approximately at the same place/folder of the scan?
Do you see a hard disk activity (when it freezes)? Is only the program frozen, or the whole computer (possibly with mouse cursor)?
Do you use ZoneAlarm?

Ok I have Windows XP and yes it is up to date
I do have a firewall and its Comodo firewall
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number? How do you figure this out?
No I only have Avast right now but prior to Avast I had McAfee
I dont believe so…
I believe the program is only frozen because I leave it on for an hour sometimes 2 and it still stays at 24%
And what is Zone alarm???
- You keep getting a “your system is running low on virtual memory” message
I did that and I tried to do a scan and it said virtual memory is too low once again >:(
I think the problem is with my computer though and not avast im not sure though ???
I would ensure that McAfee is completely gone.
- McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

How much actual RAM do you have installed ?
If you have enough to meet your everyday use on your system, then you wouldn’t be using virtual memory or certainly not much.
Having plenty of RAM means that less has to be swapped out to virtual memory, this cuts down on hard disk accesses and will speed up your computer performance.
I have 248 RAM…my computer is old got it in 01
I’ve been wanting to get a new comp but im waiting for Windows 7 to come out/
I have 248 RAMThat's almost enough to run Windows XP at a reasonable pace, if you have only one ancillary program running at the same time. Do try running the McAfee uninstall tool, but RAM shortage is probably the main issue here. As long as you want to keep using this computer without adding more RAM (doubling it would instantly make a world of difference) you will have to learn some basic tweaks, like reducing the startup list to essentials only.
Well in the meantime, RAM is relatively inexpensive and not a difficult upgrade task another 256MB stick would make a difference, swapping out your existing 256MB stick for 2x512MB sticks would make a large difference. Whilst this might seem an expense you could avoid, I’m afraid that you are likely to continue to experience these types of problem and a very slow system.
For win XP 256MB is considered a minimum requirement and you are sharing some of your with an on-board video chip. When you start to run other programs you have to consider their minimum requirements also and add that to the overall minimum or you need for multi-applications.
Ok im only 17 so im kinda lost right now lol
I have some computer knowledge but not a lot
So to add more RAM I would have to buy a new new RAM stick…how much are those and are they hard to install?
Wpuld I be able to install it myself or no?

This isn’t a reply…i’m not sure how to do this…i’m losing my “running” providers and don’t know why?! Had 7 when first installed at local PC Hospital, lost one when using ccleaner but have since rectified, now lost another and don’t know how/why or where they’ve gone!!! Please help!!
